The Trip report...

I had just having my morning coffee at my place when I spotted the truck on ebay...bids were at $7,100 but the seller said he would entertain bids...so I called him and we made a deal!

You gotta JUMP!

I had that day to get there for the buy and the next day to get home as I then had a trip the following day. So grabbed my scanner, a flashlight, radar detector, some clothes and threw them into my overnight bag. Got cleaned up, put on my uniform and headed out the door. Stopped at Wells Fargo and got a cash advance then headed for the Denver airport.

Listed myself on Frontier and flew to Portland.

The seller picked me up in a red 2018 Sierra SLT 2500 and we headed for Salem. Traffic sucked but we eventually got there. Did my inspection and found a few things right away -
Speedo inop
voltmeter inop
turn signal fast, front left light assy full of water
Crank assy & lug nut wrench missing, found it in his garage
Jumper cables, tire chains and a pair of binoculars were behind the seat (bonus!)

Finished up the deal and followed my iphone nav north and then east, stopping in Pendleton for a short night. Back up at 630 am, shower and hit the road with a cup of Travelodge coffee, off to Wal Mart!

Pick up 2 cans of Seafoam, a tire pressure gauge, new windshield wipers and a clip on the vent cell phone holder. Stopped at a gas station and got a decent cup of joe, installed the phone holder, added the Seafoam & topped off. Downloaded a speedometer app from the App store because the speedo in the truck was either dead or wanky as hell.

Drove east until I got hungry & needed gas so I stopped at a Boise area Flying J and topped off, added another 1/2 can of seafoam. Ate 2 roller hot dogs, got more coffee and headed east....and drove and drove....When I got to L*****e Wyoming the storm had hit and I-80 was an ice rink. I was in Auto 4WD and creeping with the trucks and other cars at 20-40 mph for about 3 nerve wracking hours. The roads cleared up just south of Ft Collins and I booked to the house.

1,045 miles for the day. :D

Removed the turn signal housings, emptied out the water and cleaned them up. Cleaned up the sockets and installed all new bulbs.

Removed the CB mount, power wires for it (from the battery) and removed the trailer brakes. Ran a motor flush and then drained & changed the oil with fresh Mobile 1 Synthetic and a Pure One Purolator filter.. Found a K&N air filter installed and it needed a cleaning so I cleaned, dried, oiled and reinstalled that.

I removed the upper and lower dash bezels to see how the Pioneer stereo was installed and to locate & identify the alarm system -

Wheels & tires -

The 16 inch wheels and worn out BFG T/T radials on the truck needed to be replaced.

I decided to install a set of refurbished 18 inch GMC wheels (2014-2018) purchased on ebay - in the box after arrival with the new center caps I also bought on ebay-

Image

I installed a set of Falken Wildpeak tires on them -

Stock size is 265/70R-17, final drive ratio 4.10

265/65R-18, final drive ratio 4.11

265/70R-18, final drive ratio 3.97

275/65R-18, final drive ratio 4.04 - used this size

When I bought the Sierra the seller told me that there was a knocking when hitting bumps and it sounded like it was under the dash behind the steering column.

Knock, knock, knock all the way home!

When I had the dash apart yesterday I looked and couldn't fine anything loose so I started looking online and discovered that the intermediate steering shaft is well known for causing this issue. I watch some videos on it and ordered up the parts from Advanced Auto and picked them up.

Looking at the shaft in the engine compartment - that one bolt holds the lower shaft to the intermediate -

Image

Looking up at the shaft where the intermediate connects to the upper column....I also replaced the white plastic bearing -

The old & new Dorman shafts -

Took it out for a test ride and the noise is gone

Re: SierraHondo's 2005 RCSB Z71 Sierra Build

Postby SierraHondo [OP] » Dec 19 2019, 8:42pm

Found a good company/dude in Wisconsin that is going to rebuild my instrument cluster (all new stepper motors & bulbs, test) and add a transmission temp gauge (missing on the 1500 trucks) for $205.

Mailed out the instrument cluster for repair & upgrade.

Because the tailgate on these older trucks don't lock I also installed an anti-theft device to prevent the tailgate from being swiped -

Image

My plan is to later install an electric lock actuator in the tailgate.
