Chevrolado's 2006 Silverado Z71 Crew Cab

Postby Chevrolado [OP] » Jan 17 2019, 5:47pm

Figured I would start a long and slow thread about the progress on my truck. :) I am the type that want's to keep a clean vehicle while upgrading practically and functionally to build an overall great rig to get me to the beach, the mountains, the deserts, wherever my travels can take me to enjoy this great nature we have.

Purchased: Oct 10th, 2018 @ 144,066 miles
Details:
2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z-71
5.3L V8 with K&N Intake and Flowmaster exhaust
Crew Cab - Short Bed. Bose audio, OnStar, LT package.
Future plans are to level out the suspension with a Rough Country kit, Fox shocks, Method Race Wheels, and taller BFGoodrich ATs. Amongst a few other odds and ends.

Thanks all. Yeah, looking forward to building it along.

So far after I purchased it I did a big run through on it to fix all the little things. Before I start ADDING to it - I want to get it back to a great baseline foundation.

It had a myriad of broken switches, burnt out bulbs, neglected interior.
So I swapped out all the dome lights for LEDs as well as nice bright LED reverse bulbs.
Then I replaced the headlight switch (dimming feature and dome light control didn't work), replaced the fog light switch (completely busted and wouldnt turn on and off fogs):

In southern CA, we have plenty of sun - so I had to get the greatest sunshade I know of: Covercraft UVS100 vehicle specific:

Then it had no floormats - so had to get the best of those as well. :) WeatherTech:

The exhaust had a nasty rattle from a rusted hole. So I replaced that with a great Flowmaster Super 50:

I also took it into a shop to get fresh oil and transmission fluid.
Next up (probably in Feb) I'll be doing spark plugs, wires, water pump, thermostat, and fresh coolant.

Until then.. it's raining on us and it's just sitting out there getting a free wash.

nice truck, should be a fun project.

in regards to the sun shade, have you considered a "clear" tint? it will block the uv rays and keep the heat out but visually, you wouldn't even know its there. the added benefit is that helps all the time, so while you are driving too. I plan to do it to my truck this spring, we have a 2 hour drive to the beach that is straight south, so we just have the sun blasting through the windshield the whole drive

Thanks! That's an interesting concept. I haven't ever thought of that (or heard of it). That's a neat idea. It's not all too bad for me while driving.. but my truck does spend all day long sitting in a blacktop parking lot just getting blasted by sun throughout the work day. So thats where the sunshade really helps.
Cheers though, thanks for the good idea. I'll kick it around as a possibility in the future. :)

What stopped me from doing that was the cost. I dont recall the exact numbers but remember it was pricey. Perhaps it was both that combined with the top shelf super duper tint on the other windows as well.

Oh and one thing I forgot to point out on my rig.. I discovered a couple weeks ago that I have no key-holes on the exterior of the vehicle. Some previous owner went through the "modification" process to install a non-key locked Drivers door handle on it. Truck can only be accessed by key FOB.

Image

How did I find out about this? Well, I went surfing one day. Took my key off the ring and tucked it in my wetsuit like normal. Locked all my stuff inside the cab and went surfing. 3 or so hours later.. came back to the truck burnt out, soaking wet, ready to dry off and warm up. Only to find.. I have no keyhole to put my key into! :o

Called AAA using my buddies cell phone and they got me into my cab within about 15-20 mins. I promptly went out and bought a HitchSafe to stash my keys in while I surf instead of repeating that. hah  So now let's just hope my battery in the FOB never dies while I'm out and about.
