SSchup's 2018 Silverado Build

Postby SSchup [OP] » Feb 27 2019, 4:56pm

I decided to make a build thread for my 2018 Silverado since I never did one for my 2013 GMC. I thought it would be a good place to keep track of what I've done and what I do in the future. I should of done it sooner but my Summers are my busy time, so I'll try to go back and bring it up to date.

I searched for a couple months for what I was looking for, GMC SLT or Chevy LTZ crew cab 6.2. Very few dealers here in Michigan had any 6.2's on the lot other then High Country's. I was willing to do a High Country but they had the Saddle Brown interior and I didn't care for that.
I ended up finding this truck in Southern Illinois. It had everything I wanted including Max Tow package 3.42 axle ratio. I preferred that knowing I would be putting larger tires and a level or small lift on it.
Anyhow I put a deposit on it over the phone and flew to St. Louis, was picked up at the airport and driven to the dealership. Took it for a nice drive, did the paperwork and drove it home 550 miles.
This is how she looked the next day at home after removing the running boards and mud flaps.

Thanks Neal, I'm going to go ahead and update to where I'm at now. Just wish I would have taken more time to document it at the time.

Within a couple weeks after getting it home I bought some Hostile Rage Blade Cut wheels in 20x9 with 0 offset and some Toyo RT's in 285/60/20. I've always had chrome wheels on my trucks but I thought I would break up some of the chrome with a milled wheel. Even the wife questioned me on that decision. They have never grown on me so they are coming off when this Winter is over.
Any how I did the 2" level with Fox 2.0's to run the new wheels and tires. A week later I decided I most likely would be lifting it similar to my 2013. So I ordered the CST 4.5" kit to be installed this Winter while I had some free time.
I also installed an Access toneau cover. I really didn't care for the tow mirrors that came with the Max tow package. Sold them to a friend that wanted them for his Denali HD and bought the DL3 mirrors and harness and swapped them. This is how she sat after a couple weeks with it.

I also needed a little sound since these new trucks are so quiet so I ordered a Magnaflow catback. Installed that and it gave it a nice deep sound on start up. It's really not noticeable cruising just when you get into it then you know it's there. I didn't really care for the big 5" tip that came with the catback, so I got the Summit Corsa knock off tip and had that installed by my local shop.

Next thing I did was I picked up a High Country grille. Plan was to have my front bumper wrapped in white vinyl and possibly rear also. I haven't gotten around to that yet but it will probably happen later.

You mentioned it came with 3.42 gears with the max tow package. I guess I was expecting higher gears with that. Do you have the 6 speed trans or the 8 speed? Perhaps the gearing is different if the 8?

Oh...and what is that huge ferd in the garage there? You run a business out of your home?

So next it was time to start the install of the CST kit that had been sitting in the shop for a couple months. Friend of mine has a hoist in his barn so decided against doing on jack stands like I did my 2013. The install took us about 14 hours over two days. My buddy is a retired GM proving ground mechanic. Unfortunately he likes to get ahead of the CST instructions and I had a little problem with my steering extension being out of whack and giving me some stiff steering. I ended up calling CST and they recommended I go back to the instructions and loosen the steering rack, front cross member and adjust the steering bracket. That did the trick and everything is perfect now.
I went with the CST full coilovers, not the adjustable ones. The ride is better then stock and definitely better then the level I had on it.

With the CST lift installed and after settling I'm about 1" higher in the back. I debated adding the Zone AAL or the Deaver J1 Mini-Pack to get the rear up to give me a little rake. I ended up buying the Deaver after discussing it with Performance Lifts and will be installing that next.
I don't tow and I only haul maybe 500 lbs. so I'm going for the Deaver for the nicer ride.
