4.8 swapped for a 5.3 on an ‘09 Sierra

4.8 swapped for a 5.3 on an ‘09 Sierra

2009 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE Nevada Edition 4x4
5.3 with 4Speed 4L60E

Bought this truck privately back in December, understanding that it had the 5.3 in it and I was comfortable assuming that due to being able to feel the AFM activate.

I checked the car fax before purchase and found no substantial mechanic work besides some body work to the truck bed.

I even bought the Range AFM deactivate module and noticed great results in consistent power and drive feel.

I began to notice a trend that all other Sierra Nevada editions had the 4.8 in it, which I thought it was strange that mine was the only one I knew of and seen that had a 5.3 under the hood.

I checked my vin and matched codes and found that it came from factory with the 4.8.

This past Friday (02/19/21), I pulled a 5,200 pound trailer and car and had very little trouble getting up to speed and noticed something even better!

My transmission temp was consistently dropping in tow mode and never had any hesitation. I popped my hood once getting home and started poking around some more and found that there was a good sized transmission cooler installed at some point.

With these two discoveries I’m pretty comfortable coming to the conclusion that the factory 4.8 was swapped for an AFM 5.3 and the 4L60E had at the very least a cooler installed.

What’s you guy’s thoughts? I’ve had nothing worth being concerned about on the truck and it runs amazing with 175,000kms (~105,000 Miles) on the gauge.

I’m very particular about maintenance on my Jeeps and trucks so I have a good feeling this truck will last me a long time.

i'd bet money it has not been swapped with a 5.3 as 4.8s and 5.3s have nearly identical hp/tq ratings, just the 4.8 is a tad higher in the rpms.
many trucks have trans coolers installed. nothing to exciting there.
possibly, the truck had a proper tune done on it, and that is really what you are experiencing.
my 2009 4.8 had zero issues with pulling a car hauler

The only thing making me question the idea of it being swapped is the fact that the AFM before plugging in the Range module felt very prominent.

Based on all of the sources I can possibly find, the 4.8 doesn’t have AFM. Honestly I wouldn’t mind the 5.3 or 4.8
