5.3 Garbage

5.3 Garbage

Postby taxabel [OP] » Jan 17 2018, 3:40am

I doubt very many people here have taken better care of their truck than me. 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Truck hit 110,000 miles and a very loud noice came from under the hood. This truck has the AFM deleted when I installed the 87 octane tune at about 3,000 miles. Since the first oil change I have used 5-30 Amsoil. Regular oil changes at 30% life. The noise was a non AFM lifter that failed which will cost $10,000 to rebuild or $9,000 for a new motor. Parts would include a new set of lifters, cam, radiator, oil pump, many many gaskets, etc. The truck is of warranty of course, and I'm stuck with the big bill. I will never ever buy another GM truck. Thanks GM....

Should of tossed a scrap yard engine in and traded it off. That’s just crazy, really feel for you.

Why are you replacing the rad?.

Another reason that I went Ram.
Thanks,
Will

Should not cost that much to repair even if damaged.

You mentioned a AFM delete...but sounds like you just had it turned off with the tuner. All the components (lifters) are still there. It is very much a shame if you have had a failed component and now have to deal with that...but for as many as have had this problem..there is an overwhelming number of trucks that have had no issue at all.

You will run about the same chances of having troubles with any other brand you go with. Things just happen. I can understand your frustration but this is a fairly GM loyal forum you just posted on so just consider that if harsh responses come.

Because no Ram has ever had an early engine failure  Give me a break!

When millions of things are made you're going to have a few duds. Sucks The OP got one of those, and heck it wasn't even an AFM-related component which is usually what you'd expect would fail if something did. But to write off every single one just because one died, well... Heck, you might as well go back to horse and buggy because EVERY engine from EVERY brand has had a failure at some point. Oh wait, with a horse and buggy you might have a lame horse, shoot guess you're not safe there either

That said... $10k sounds way overpriced to fix a failed lifter. Even if the lifter wiped out the cam, it shouldn't cost near that much to fix. Who gave you this ridiculous quote?

Pretty sure you can buy a brand new crate motor for less than that... way less.

But either way, good luck with any other brand. Everything is the same no matter what you go to. You'll always get the odd motor here and there that has an issue.

Love these “I’m never gonna buy [insert a vehicle brand here] ever again!!!” threads you see in each and every forum.

Yes, it sucks that OP’s truck encountered an issue, but at the same time it should not cost anywhere near 9-10K to remedy the situation. Plenty of good engines from salvaged truck available for around $2K, give or take a little. Crate engines, as mentioned above) can be had for under $4K.

But anyway... Good luck with what ever brand you decide to go with, OP.

Hmm if I read it correctly, he tuned it at 3000 miles and it failed at 110,000? An average driver puts about 12K miles a year, so that's almost 9 years. Almost a decade and 107,000 miles seems pretty decent without issues. I mean we all want to see 200K, but you gotta be realistic.

It is at the GMC dealer in Woodland, Ca. The labor for rebuilding existing motor is 38 hours which is $5,700. The warranty would be 1 year, 12,000 miles. The labor to replace with new engine is 27 hours which is $4,000. Warranty is 3 years, 100,000 miles.

Well, first thing is first. Having this work done at a dealer on a truck not under warranty is going to cost considerably more than another shop. For the prices you are quoting. You could have a speed shop rebuild that engine with a whole ton of extra power, no afm internal parts and some trick go fast bits. Short of it wiping out the block. You're looking at a top end rebuild. These can be done with parts by a reputable shop for half the prices you are getting.

You don't seem to understand, the engine needs to be torn down to find the issue. They tear down the top half and the damage is ascertained. You owe for that work. In addition, California is a smog state you can't just do anything you want to the engine and have it pass smog. The cost would end up being the same even if you told The dealer to pound salt and towed it elsewhere. I hope this doesn't happen to any of you but be prepared and google 5.3 lifter issues and see the thousands of disgruntled owners...
