5.3 swap

5.3 swap

Postby USMC MECH [OP] » Jul 22 2021, 2:55am

My 2000 Silverado has a 5.3L Vortec which has a slight knock. Can I get opinions on swapping my engine for another slightly built 5.3L engine? Also would I have to do anything with computer or is it just a one for one swap(plug and play ) over a weekend?

Going to need a tune if you are changing engine parts. You can swap a 5.3 easy if it is just stock for stock though

There are a few differences throughout the 99-06. If you use the same year, then without looking up what they are, it will work. If you use a new computer, it will need to be programmed for your VIN.

When you say "slightly built 5.3", what does that mean? Most people on here will tell you to get a 6.0 instead. It's a minimal cost upgrade, and a better start than a 5.3 for what you get, especially if you are already looking to do more than stock. It sounds like it will be the exact same work as you will do with that 5.3.

No need for a new computer or harness. The only thing different between the 99-02 engines and the 03-07 is the oil pressure sending unit and the crank sensor but it can still work. Also drive by cable and drive by wire but you can just swap intakes it literally is the easiest job ever. (I say as I continuously put off doing my knock sensors...)

I did knock sensors 3 times in one year 1st on my 04 Silverado, then the 04 Tahoe, and then mom's Tahoe. Each time I removed the foam blocks and silicone sealed the cups into the recesses. The swap is not hard more just time consuming and simple if you get matching engines. If you plan to do any upgrades on the engine I would decide before you get everything installed in the truck it is much easier to do on a stand and your back will appreciate along with the wife not taking up the garage in the middle of winter booting her car into the driveway. Invest in shrink wrap so when you step away from the engine to keep it sealed up and clean or duck any holes where dust/dirt/insects can get into the motor and especially moisture/humidity. Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
