Belt/pulley squeak on cold start on 2007 new body 5.3

Postby dalejrfan88 [OP] » Dec 30 2011, 7:29pm

Hello. I was wondering if anyone has experienced a squeak/chirp on these 5.3 afm motors. It only is present when engine is cold then goes completely away when engine is warmed up after driving it. I used to have the noise even in the summer when started but i replaced the idler pulley and put on a new belt(gates) and seemed to fix it.. Now thats its cold out after a rain or a cold morning i get a annoying chirp. Sounds like from the passenger side.It Still doesnt do it on every start-up however. Could it be the ac belt getting wet? I have also heard it could be lateral movement on my power steering pulley due to it being not pushed on all the way but it looks fine to me. Any input would be great. Thanks

i had a pretty loud squeek today, i was in the house getting ready for work my wife starts my truck for me ( which was awesome) and it made a real loud squeel i could hear it in my kitchen all the way on the other side of the house. It definetly was the first time that ever happen and other times when i start it after work it gives a tiny little one. but today was 26 when i woke up so i dont know if that might be an issue either...

In wisconsin here i get a cold start noise when i remote start it! It sounds like the starter is getting double started if that makes any sense or like choking a rooster out for a second. Mine has done that since its been brand new when it is cold. That is very loud but not belt or pulley related i dont think. In Carolina cold for you must be 30 degrees..here its -30 lol!!!!!!

Does yours sound like that, the video is of my 2008 4.8l same engine just different strokes. I thought it was a belt/pulley so I replaced the serpentine belt and idler pulley and no fix so I took both belts off the truck and started it up and it still makes this noise.

Yeah. good video but mine is more of annoying chirp. That almost sounds like a little bit of that lifter tick. Mine used to get that from the drivers side of the motor when i had conventional oil in it from the dealer when they fixed my oil burning issue. I switched back to the synthetic and it doesnt make that noise anymore

This just started a few days ago, and have no idea what it is. At first I thought it was a bearing letting go in one of the pulleys but I changed my belts and idler puller then no fix. So then I took all the belts off and the sound in the video is what is left.

Thanks for all the replies. I think im going to try the ac belt and see if that helps. It seemed really loud today and this was the first time it didnt go away after warming it up. I know i dripped some fresh oil somewhere in the engine after yesterdays oil change. Could oil dripping on a belt cause any squeaking?

I had a sqeek/chirp on mine so I replaced both belts, the idler and both tensioners, I still had the chirp, then I went to the dealer and the tech went a got a stethoscope to listen to stuff and what he found was the water pump was making the noise, got a new one under PT warranty.
