Clicking coming from around cylinders 1-3

Postby jblanksilverado1 [OP] » Feb 26 2021, 11:26pm

I’m hearing a fairly quiet ticking coming from the driver side of the engine block, more specifically the front around cylinders 1-3. It’s not loud, hardly audible unless the hood is popped or the sound bounces off of walls (drive thrus especially)

No codes being thrown, no misfiring, no noticeable loss of power. The ticking/clicking speed increases with RPMs. It doesn’t get louder, just faster. Fairly strong exhaust fumes can be smelled when the hood is popped.

Either I didn’t notice it, or it didn’t show up until after changing spark plugs and wires. Double and triple checked spark plug/wire fitment, all are on snug and none are wiggling when the engine is running. Oil pressure gauge is where it should be. Going to take it into the shop Monday but I figured I’d ask around and see if anybody has any ideas on what it could be.

I’ve had some suggest maybe a lifter tick (although it’s awful quiet) and some suggest maybe an exhaust leak on the manifold (Even though no CEL is popping up and it still drives smooth)

Thanks!

Look for broken exhaust manifold bolts. Not uncommon on Vortec motors.

Checked out the bolts. None of the heads appear to be broken, unless the studs are.

With the engine cold, start the motor and put your fingers at the gasket line around the manifold. Run them all around the manifold. Do it quickly before things start to get hot. You should be able to feel any exhaust leaking from the area between the head and the manifold.

Will try this later. I’m guessing this is to check if any studs are broken? Thank you

Put your Shop vac on blow into the tail pipe and wrap it snug with a towel so it doesn’t blow out.

Then fill a spay bottle with water and add a couple drops of dish soap to it.

Fire up the vac and spray around the gasket, bolts, etc and look for bubbles.

Took it to the shop yesterday.

They told me nothing sounds “out of the ordinary”. The owner even said his ‘07 does the same thing and that he’s taken it in and taken it apart multiple times and nothing is wrong. Maybe I’m just paranoid.

I might still try the water shop vac trick sometime to see if there’s a leak in the manifold, but at the moment I’m not going to worry about it much unless it throws a code or starts running differently.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions

All you have to do is stick your dang finger around the mating surface between the exhaust manifold and head during a cold start up. You will feel the exhaust blowing out if it is leaking. Apparently that is more effort than driving it to a shop..

I did, and felt nothing. No black soot or anything on the manifold either. That’s why I took it in
