engine whine/buzz

engine whine or buzz under hard acceleration

engine whine/buzz

Postby apiatech [OP] » Aug 14 2015, 3:34pm

When I pin the throttle and tach is 4500-5000 rpm, I get a whine or buzz under the hood, I do not hear it under normal acceleration. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Alternators can whine.
Transmissions can whine.
Power steering pumps can whine.

My guess is it's the tranny since it doesn't happen under normal acceleration. My '98 GMC 4L60E will give forth with a little bit of pump whine from the tranny if I give it a good run up through the gears. Been that way for awhile. Hasn't gotten any worse and the tranny doesn't seem to exhibit any unusual behaviors.

I don't think it is in the transmission, the noise is clearly forward in the engine bay

Okay.
Shot in the dark: check the power steering fluid. Make sure it's up to the proper level (cold or hot). Might be pump cavitation at the higher RPM's if the level is low.

I'm a little late to this discussion but I recently bought a used 2011 Silverado 1500 LTZ/Z71 with a 5.3L and it sounds like you all have the same issue. The noise I hear sounds like a supercharger kicking in and under normal acceleration, I don't hear it but when I floor-it, after about 2-3 seconds, its very apparent. This truck has 101k miles on it and I'm about to do a full fluids replacement but at this time, none of the fluids are low so I can't say thats the problem. Its possible it could be the power steering unit or alternator. I've been wanting to beef up the alternator anyway because I'm going to do a dual battery setup so maybe its a good time to replace it.

Is this a common issue and what have others found to resolve it?
