Massive coolant leak

Massive coolant leak

Postby ctcpc32 [OP] » Apr 25 2013, 5:03am

My 03 has a weird coolant leak, the other day while on a job i returned to my truck to find about three quarts of coolant under the truck. I refilled it and it did not leak for about another two days. Then again today had to stop and add more. I can not see where the leak is coming from. I think i need a new water pump, do not see any broken lines. But why would it leak that much some times and not others>???????

Thanks for any advice.....

You can put in some uv dye... but a leak that big that doesnt leak constantly sounds water pumpish to me.

I am pretty sure it is the water pump, was under the truck this morning and there was water all over the bottom front of the motor. A lot seemed to be running down the front. I have 180,000 miles on it, if it just a gasket should i go ahead and replace the pump anyways? And if it is the pump, why would it only leak sometimes and not others? Thanks again for the help.

it may be like mine, if its under the side of your truck. my overflow pukes sometimes and not others. at least on mine this is due to cracked heads that when the truck stops forces compression into the coolant system and then it pukes.. Also ironically enough , coolant is NOT mixing with oil, so it looks normal...

It may be the water pump or gasket.. If it were me i would by a quality pump when doing the gasket.. my problem requires new heads ( if your interested in seeing if your heads are bad.. take the valve cover off and look to see if there castech heads or have cracked oil bosses)

Same happened to my 04 recently. I hope you don't like money too much because my repair was over $500 for water pump, thermostat, parts and labor.

The leak is dead center under the truck, i dont think it the overflow. Should the thermostat be replaced with the pump? And no labor costs, i am going to do it myself.

I would replaces most things pertaining to the cooling system if it has decent mileage on it

hoses, pump, gaskets, thermostat and even flush out the heater core if you can

Id do pump gasket and thermostat just for the sake of saving antifreeze... thermostats only $20 more

Did this ever get fixed?
If so what was it?
if not, did you check the two small coolant lines under the Throttle body?
Use a mirror to see if they look wet under there

Water pumps are common leakers on these engines. Do the pump, Tstat, and just check your heater hoses where that go into the fire wall.

The best way to be sure is to use a pressure tester on the cooling system. You can probably rent one at Autozone or Oreilleys. Do not exceed 15 PSI when testing.
