Oil Leak -- Valley cover, or cam position sensor?

Oil Leak -- Valley cover, or cam position sensor?

Postby DaveTheGhost [OP] » Feb 13 2020, 7:56pm

As title suggests, I have an oil leak. However, I am not sure where it is originating from. I've these two images after tracing the fabled oil dripping from starter bolts, up the block to the heads, and then over to this area.

Any advice ?

Clean it up the best you can then do a dye test with a black light. It should be pretty obvious from where the leak is coming.

Might have to give that a try. Although it's a serious pain in the butt to get back there, I was able to snap those pictures by shoving the phone and blindly tapping the capture button with the flash on.

Either I'll have to remove the manifold and clean it thoroughly that way, probably needing new intake gaskets, or perhaps the pressure from a can of brake cleaner can get enough of the gunk off to get a better idea of where it's coming from.

Was hoping someone might have had this issue already, and solved it.

Thanks for the reply!

That is the valley cover. Either way lift the intake manifold and replace the valley cover gasket, the cam sensor, oil pressure sensor, and oil pressure screen. This is a classic example of needing to do a blanket repair job. Cover everything.

Ahh, that's a new concept for me! Blanket repair. Seems like a better approach, to be honest. Cover everything perceivable in the general area, instead of having to work twice or thrice!

Thanks for your reply, I'll give that a go.
