09 1500 5.3 to 6.0 Swap, For Real

I'm really doing this

09 1500 5.3 to 6.0 Swap, For Real

Postby ThaDoubleJ [OP] » Jul 26 2018, 6:01am

Ok, I'm really doing this swap. I've got the motor, it's got a new, non-vvt cam and all associated gears and covers. The old cam had two damaged lobes, and I've got two damaged lifters to go along with them. I got to pull the heads and replaced the lifters and guides as well. The cost of gaskets is killing me.

Next up is to pull the 5.3 out of the truck and cram the 6.0 in there.

I've run into snag #1: Apparently, the knock sensors on a 5.3 are in the valley. On the L96 6.0 they're in the sides of the block, underneath the exhaust manifolds.

That reminds me, this thing had a broken exhaust manifold bolt...I hear that's common...what grade (metric) bolts do I want that won't break?

Ok, I'm back. So do I somehow convert the 5.3 center mounted knock sensors into the 6.0 engine, or do I connect the 6.0 sensors into the trucks wiring harness?

I have the entire 6.0 harness, so the clips are there.

Wish me luck, I'm going to start draining fluids and such in the next couple of days.

If the 5.3 is from the 2009, it is plug and play. All sensors are in the same locations. Knock Sensors are on the side of the block for all Gen4 Engines.
The L96 will completely hook up, just need a tune for the 6.0 and to tune out AFM/DOD and VVT on the ECU. I can not remember if the Injectors are the same plug tho, pretty sure they are. You don't even need to change the wiring harness. This is probably the easiest swap you can do, literally nothing has to be changed.

Just tape the ends of the VVT Plug and AFM/DOD Plug, and use a ziptie to hold them to the harness.

^^ And this is why GM, at least in the older trucks, will always reign supreme for modifying and doing swaps like this.

Great news, 07, thank you.
Rambo, that article confirms pretty much everything, should be a sticky for swaps.

For those of you that have pulled an engine from one of these trucks, do I need a valley plate or can I do the bolts and a chain method that I used to put it on the stand?

Can the pan on the 4L60e support it if I use a floor jack to lower it enough to get at the transfer case bolts?

Here's some tips: The transfer case has a bracket bolted to it that supports the fuel lines for some reason. Dumb. The transfer case is also too heavy to get out by yourself unless you want it to smash your finger into something purple and gross.
