What Is It!?

What Is It!?

Postby Jarhead86 [OP] » Nov 23 2019, 7:37pm

Hey Folks!

My wife and I are looking at moving into an RV full time. To ensure we had something that could tow, we started looking around for a truck. We are on a tight budget with a family of seven, so I ended up getting a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD with the 8.1 L V8 and Allison Transmission. From what I gathered about the vehicle, it was owned by the California Department of Motor Vehicles before it went up for auction. Carfax on it came back clean. There are some things about this truck I can’t quite figure out though: I can’t figure out the axle ratio (sticker is missing in glove box) and I can’t figure out the trim. I put the vin in a bin decoder and it came back as a Work Truck. It also said it has a 4.10 axle ratio - but from what I read, that axle ratio is not common, so I’m having my doubts.

I really am impressed with the level of care and condition of the vehicle given it’s year. Mileage is about 131,100. That brings about another question: how long can I expect this engine to last with routine maintenance?

I am not mechanically savvy and a bit of a newby, so any insight is appreciated.

Welcome.

You most likely have 4.10 in that truck. 4.10 is common in the HD trucks. It's either 3.73 or 4.10 for the HD trucks. Those are the only two options.

Thanks!

From what I understand, this truck is supposed to be a towing beast. With it being a 4.10, that’s good to know, because it makes a difference when looking at the weight of fifth wheelers. It’s supposed to be able to tow 16,100 with that axle ratio if moving a fifth wheel.

Yeah you definitely do not want the 2500s that come with 3.73. They are severely neutered.

Its a typical fleet work truck. Its going to have the basic interior, vinyl seats, vinyl floor mat (no carpet), little to no optional equipment to keep cost low. Orange is a typical CALTRANS color. Might have been a supervisors truck which would account for the great condition.

I honestly kinda like the color. Ita different, and if outfitted right I think it would look sweet.

Is that painter's tape on the shock? Looks like the underside has been repainted recently. Still, it looks to be in great shape.

You can always email GM for a complete build sheet of the truck. Just send your VIN to [email protected] . They are pretty good at getting back with you quick.

Nice truck. Mine is an 06 also. It has 4.10 gears and 6 speed Allison. Same as yours. These are Industrial motors so you could easily get another 100-200k out of the motor if you keep up on oil changes. I know of a guy who hauls I’ll over the country with a car carrier and he is over 600k on the factory motor and still going.
