Tire Size-2018 Silverado with Leveling kit & Factory Wheels

Postby ITandCO [OP] » May 22 2020, 3:52pm

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased my first truck and I'm very new to tire/wheel up sizing, etc. I've done a lot of searching on the forum and have come across some good threads but I'm still unsure so I decided to post my own question. Thanks in advance for giving it a read and offering some advice :D

I've got a 2018 Silverado 1500 that I'm having a front leveling kit installed on next week. It currently has the factory wheels and tires (255/70R17 110S - 8Jx17 ET24 - 6x139.7 I am positive of tire size, but rim dimensions I found online, but still look to be correct). I'm trying to determine what size tire I can fit without changing out the factory wheels, and with no, minor, or significant plastic trimming (and if so, what/how exactly is trimmed within the wheel well area). I'm still gaining an understanding of how rim size and offsets play into fitting a larger tire size, but from my research online it looks like I can fit a 32" or even a 33" tire. However, I've also found some conflicting information.

Another point, will I need to have my speedometer re-calibrated? Also, how does travel in the suspension when driving off road affect tire size? If the tire just barely clears on flat surfaces, won't I run into issues with the tire stuffing into the wheel well?

Any info or advice is much appreciated! I'm happy to provide more information as well.

https://tiresize.com/comparison/

This site is helpful when comparing two tire sizes. 33’s work with a level but the width is where you will get your rubbing from.

If the tire is too wide then an offset that moves towards a negative offset will be needed to push the wheel out some.

33’s with a leveling kit only.

The tire size comparison site is what I use as well.

Add in that different brands vary in their sizes as well. Some are run big and some run small.

Speedometer shouldn’t be an issue with 33’s. Mine is still spot on and I haven’t had it recalibrated (2.5” lift and 33’s).

That's great info, thanks. In that case, if I went with a 255/80r/17 I could achieve a larger tire with the same width (looks like a lot of them are about 10" wide, just like my 255/70r/17's). However, I'd like to go a little wider if possible. Is there any easy way to determine if I'll see rubbing? Maybe turn the wheel all the way in one direction and then measure the remaining spacing?

Thanks!

Could do a 285/70r17 thats what I ran on my 09 with a 2" level and your 2018 has a tad more room than the older ones.

Thanks! Did you stay with 255 or did you up it to a wider tire, like the 275-285's?

Thanks.
