This is a very simple mod that I thought I would pass along. For the last 10 years, I have stored my jumper cables, tools, and rope under the rear seat of my 2002 Silverado extended cab...and that's with an amp and a speaker box back there too. When I bought my 2013 Silverado extended cab, I was excited to see an empty battery area at the front of the truck on the drivers side under the hood!! Storage under the hood out of the way...finally!
1) Buy an empty battery box (I bought mine at Northern Tool for $9.
2) Buy an M8x30mm bolt (coarse thread) and washer at the hardware store. And you will need a couple of zip ties.
3) Set the battery box in position and mark on the box where the washer fluid spout interferes.
4) Remove the battery box, and cut the interfering slot (about 2"x 2") out of the box with a rotary tool, hot knife, etc. This doesn't have to be exact...just cut enough of the box away to make it fit.
5) Drill a hole in each corner of the box for drainage.
6) Note that there is threaded hole on the battery platform. You will need to drill a mating hole through the box and use this threaded hole. Before you put the box in place, note its location.
7) Place the battery box back in place... (you might need to relocate a wire from the electrical box out of the way if its in the way. I routed the smaller exposed wire under the wire loom for protection)...no pictures to show this.
8) Drill an 8mm or equivalent diameter hole in the battery box to line up with the threaded hole.
9) Instert the 8mm bolt/washer to hold the battery box down....also attach the zip ties to the battery box to something sturdy under the hood. I used 2 zip ties close to the washer fluid filler neck...but it depends on where the battery box holes, etc are. Improvise here.
10) Tighten the bolt and the zip ties.
You now have room for tools, jumper cables, and rope...or whatever else you want to store there....for only $10.
