This is a very simple mod that I thought I would pass along. For the last 10 years, I have stored my jumper cables, tools, and rope under the rear seat of my 2002 Silverado extended cab...and that's with an amp and a speaker box back there too. When I bought my 2013 Silverado extended cab, I was excited to see an empty battery area at the front of the truck on the drivers side under the hood!! Storage under the hood out of the way...finally!

1) Buy an empty battery box (I bought mine at Northern Tool for $9.
2) Buy an M8x30mm bolt (coarse thread) and washer at the hardware store. And you will need a couple of zip ties.
3) Set the battery box in position and mark on the box where the washer fluid spout interferes.
4) Remove the battery box, and cut the interfering slot (about 2"x 2") out of the box with a rotary tool, hot knife, etc. This doesn't have to be exact...just cut enough of the box away to make it fit.
5) Drill a hole in each corner of the box for drainage.
6) Note that there is threaded hole on the battery platform. You will need to drill a mating hole through the box and use this threaded hole. Before you put the box in place, note its location.
7) Place the battery box back in place... (you might need to relocate a wire from the electrical box out of the way if its in the way. I routed the smaller exposed wire under the wire loom for protection)...no pictures to show this.
8) Drill an 8mm or equivalent diameter hole in the battery box to line up with the threaded hole.
9) Instert the 8mm bolt/washer to hold the battery box down....also attach the zip ties to the battery box to something sturdy under the hood. I used 2 zip ties close to the washer fluid filler neck...but it depends on where the battery box holes, etc are. Improvise here.
10) Tighten the bolt and the zip ties.

You now have room for tools, jumper cables, and rope...or whatever else you want to store there....for only $10.

Thanks and I'm glad you guys like the idea. A few things I will have to say is make sure that whatever you put in the box is covered in plastic because it tends to get wet inside the box....that's why the drain holes are important. Also, remember, that whatever is in the box will go through heat cycles with the engine...some plastics might turn brittle over time, etc. My father back in the day always had a box like this under the hood but most trucks now don't have any extra space for storage. I couldn't believe that there was usuable space under the hood on a 2013!

Nice codeman!

And I was trying to come up with a reason to get another battery, this will free up some room in the cab.

Any reason you didn't get a box with a sealing lid? (not enough room height wise?)

I did get the sealing lid and that would be nice to use...but there's no way it will fit. The battery box barely fits under the round cross support that you see in the picture. Unfortunately, the lid that came with the battery box is another 3" or so tall and there was no way it would fit.

what if u shortened the entire box? From the top of the box, cut it down 2-3" and then use the lid?

Good idea, I'm searching for a shorter box...if not then its getting cut (maybe)
It would be perfect if sealed up I think

I like the idea of using this space. I don't want an open top box. I will find something that fits or maybe a weather resistant convas tool bag/
I can't wait to see what you come up with.... keep us posted. I'd love to have a top on the box but an open box is better than no storage at all.

Ok, I got this box from Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Shallow-Dry ... plano+1412

It fits and has a tight sealing o-ring lid. It is not a tall box so the lid will still open enough after it is mounted which I hope to do this weekend. Will post apic of it in the truck asap...

Awesome idea. I was looking at this space today and was wondering what to do with it. As someone else said its weird to see this amount of free space in a newer vehicle. This is something I'm used to seeing in my 1980 z28 not something I expected in my 2013 silverado
