2012 OEM back up camera wiring

I just obtained an OEM rear backup camera pulled from a salvage 2012 Silverado, and would like to install this in my 2013 Sierra SLE, and use the rear view mirror monitor. I have looked everywhere for a diagram to identify the six wires that go to this unit.

I have red, yellow, white wires going to one connector, and grey, black, and tan wires in another bunch. I am also curious if this OEM Panasonic camera is a 6 volt unit like those in the Tundras. Has anyone tied these factory units into a RCA connector? My truck has the dark blue and white wires present at the existing onstar mirror.

The wires from the camera may be different colors than those in the GM wiring harness.
Here are the three connectors used...
This is for the rearview camera option:

1 GY/D-BU Camera Video signal (+)
2 WH Drain Wire
3 L-GN Backup Lamp Relay control
4 GY/OG Camera Video signal (-)
5 BK Ground
6 PK Ignition voltage

These two are for the monitor camera options:

1 L-BU Camera Video Signal (-)
2 BK/WH Ground
3 D-BU Backup Lamp Relay Control
4 NA

1 WH Camera Video Signal (+)
2 GY Drain Wire
3 NA
4 PK Ignition voltage

I would guess that your camera came off a vehicle with a monitor vs. a rearview mirror display. At least that is what I would surmise looking at the GM schematics.

Thanks to member Welcher774, I think I have this figured out. GM did indeed use different colored wires on the camera end versus the vehicle harness.

The video positive is yellow on the camera harness side, and grey/dk blue on the chassis harness side.

The video negative is brown on the camera harness side, and grey orange on the chassis harness side.

The reverse wire feed is grey on the camera harness side, and light green on the chassis harness side.

The Ignition positive feed is red on the camera side, and pink on the chassis harness side.

The ground wire is black on both sides.

The shield wire is white on both sides.

What I find odd is that the camera is energized by two sources. The ignition positive, which is on when the key is on, and the reverse feed, which is energized when the truck is placed in reverse. Aftermarket cameras only get power when the vehicle is placed in reverse. Is this due to the fact that the reverse lights are illuminated when the vehicle is unlocked/locked with the key fob when it's dark out? Any thoughts on this?

As for running wires front to rear 3 options go back to salvage place you got camera and ask to remove the harness it runs on driver frame rail. Option two make your own by taking the different colored wires put In a drill and other end in a vise or have someone hold them spin the wires until all twisted together then tape em up or put in flex loom. Option three go to stereo shop and buy "speed wire" by stinger it has multiple pairs of wires with a rubber outer sheath on it. Stereo shops use it when installing amps and speakers cuts down n amount of wires needed and a remote on wire for amp as already in the bundle. Good luck let me know if you need anything else.

When you get this all set up and installed could you possibly make a list of everything that you purchased from the junkyard and maybe what it all cost you? I am thinking of doing the same thing.
Also did you get the mirror with the screen in it from the junkyard also?

Thanks,
Ron

I purchased the tailgate handle bezel/camera from E-Bay for $20 shipped. I just tested the camera and it was inoperative. I will be purchasing a Pyle aftermarket camera to fit in the bezel, and use all of the factory mounting parts. I am still working on purchasing a used OEM Gentex mirror for under $100. The Pyle camera is very similar in appearance to the OEM camera, and comes with a RCA female end. I will tie into the backup lamp wire, and purchase the RCA conversion harness that plugs into the existing mirror harness in drivers side kick panel.

I just finished the installation of a back up camera in my 2013 Sierra SLE extended cab. The installation went very smoothly, with the exception of a defective Pyle camera, which I had to buy a second to finish the project. I used a brand new OEM autodim Gentex 657 OnStar rearview mirror monitor, and the aforementioned OEM tailgate bezel. I bought the mirror on E-Bay for $100. The rest of the system was sourced aftermarket. The adapter that connects to connector X208 was purchased on E-Bay, as were the Pyle PLCM37FRV cameras. It works well, even in the dark. I'm very pleased with it. I have just over $200 invested including the cost of two camera, and the new GM mirror.

So obviously what I'm gathering here is it isn't a plug and play option. I thought of doing this myself since I needed to compromise on I some features so I could purchase my Sierra.

Little confused as to how much rewiring you had to do. I do the hole to run the wires is predrilled in the tailgate ;)

If you have a SLE or higher trim level Sierra, the 2 wires from the inside rear view mirror to the drivers kick panel are there already. They are dark blue and white. You will easily see them on the large connector that is present on your existing rear view mirror. You will need a RCA conversion harness to connect to these wires at the x208 connector in the kick panel. Then you run a male/male RCA 25 foot long video cable from the drivers kick panel to the tailgate. There is a pre-existing hole in the bed sill, but a hole is needed in the bottom of the tailgate. The other parts needed are the Gentex 657 OEM rear view mirror, tailgate handle bezel, and the camera. All in all, it was a pretty easy addition that took an estimated 2 hours for me to install.

Hi new member...however I have read several articles on the site. I stumbled across this thread while searching a issue that I am currently working on. I have a 2012 Sierra that has the back up camera and video in the mirror. However the eyes are not quite like they use to be and the video is pretty small..any how I am installing a new Pioneer 7" head unit that has video and would like to grab the video feed from the OEM camera if possible...I wouldn't even mind having it unconnected to the mirror. Anyone have any guidance on this by chance..and thanks for your time..

Im trying to figure out how i could wire my reverse camera to a separate switch so i could turn the camera on at anytime. Im thinking the Light green reverse wire needs to be grounded?

Just did that mod myself a few days ago. You don't wanna use the reverse feed unless you want your backup light on while your using it. If you look at the first schematic on the first page I added switched 12v power to the dark blue wire X2 pin 22 off the bcm. I did mine at the left I/P junction block.Things to note:camera will only stay on 3 minutes it's a built in safety to keep the mirror from over heating.I took mine off for the time being till it get a momentary on switch and figure out where to put it.

That's correct I drew my 12v from circuit 239 pink wire and connected it to circuit 38 dark blue wire with a switch at the junction block left I/P connector X1 pins A4 and p1.

The junction block I/P left is located left of the brake pedal. Disconnect the battery and remove the junction block(don't worry all the wires only go back in one way).On the back side there are 2 big connectors the gray one is the X1.Locate the dark blue wire there is only one one the connector it's in one of the corners. The pink wire I used is located caddy corner and one pin over.Go 2-3 inches up the wires and add scotch locks, wires and your switch, reassemble and test operation.

Here is a video of the operation.

Old thread, I know........I'm a noobie to this site and have stumbled across this headache of wiring up a backup camera from a 2010 Sierra into my 2009 Silverado.
I'm not sure if I followed 2013SierraSLE 's process in its entirety. Was it ever possible to wire in the cam from the salvage truck or did the OE wiring harness issues not let you ?
I have to GNTX657 and the video cables / Rca Jacks etc. But the image is fuzzy and I connected every wire and shielded etc. but can't get the image to clear up. Is the recommendation to all it quits and get a aftermarket cam? Any help is appreciated. Great site and wealth of Info here by the way

I know that this is an old post, but does anybody know what this connector is called or where to source it? I need to build a wiring harness for a trailer and the GM dealer can't seem to find this connector available without also buying a backup camera. I haven't been able to successfully identify it on any other sites either.
