Like others said, the current family of GM V-8's, (in production vehicles, anyway), are called LS engines. Completely different than the old Small blocks and Big-Blocks.
If one had to put them in one category or the other, they would definitely be considered small blocks, but because the design is so completely different, folks just call them LS motors.
As for non-production vehicle crate engines, you can buy a 572 cubic inch crate big-block form GM, (9.4 Liters), with a pump gas option that puts out 620 HP, or a higher compression race gas version, good for 720 HP. And they come with a 1 year warranty!
Gm hasn't used the "current" ls platform since 2014. There are no more ls engines.

The Chevy SS did still use it (LS3) until production shut down in 2017.

Yeah and I forgot about the 6.0 in the hd trucks. I need my morning coffee.

But it's still not really the "current" family of gm engines. Since the ecotec took over.

but those ecotec blocks are externally the same as the earlier ls engines, no?

Nope. Nothing is the same. There were a bunch of articles that came out about them back in 2013 when they were first being released.

There are also some articles about people converting their ls swaps to the new lt engine wheee they have to change the motor mounts and whatnot

The new ecotec motors are more similar to an LT1 than the LS motors. But even at that, there are still differences.

The L86 in the trucks is an EcoTech3 LT1. So yes they'd be the same. Gotta consider what generation of Ecotech though. I swear GM does this crap purposely to confuse people. There are for instance the LS6 designation. That can refer to a High output version of the LS1 from a mid 2000's Corvette Z06. It can also refer to a mid 70s 454 or even a 6 cylinder Iron Duke.

Oh don't even get into Rpo recycling lol. I mean an LT1 was kind of a poor choice being they made LT1s in Vettes and Camaros from 92 to 97.. and 70 to 72 lol. They reuse a lot of them constantly... It's what they do when an engine goes out of production. I mean the L82 was a Vette 350 throughout the 70s... also was the rpo for the 3.1 V6 in my 97 Monte Carlo lol.
