Ya' know, this is all really sad. I had a '98 2500 with a 454 that averaged 15-16 mpg all the time. It had 4.10 diffs also. Makes me sad I ever got rid of it. Granted, it was primarily a rural pickup that only a small percentage was in town driving. Just a good all around pickup. It should be (but it isn't) embarrassing for GM that they haven't improved mpg on these vehicles in almost two decades.

Just got back from a round trip Houston/Dallas. By myself, cruise set on 70, the MPG was right at 14.9. Coming back I set the cruise at 75 going into the wind somewhat and the MPG was 14.5.
This is with 3.73 gears, long tubes, cats deleted and a tune.

Well I am doing better,, 6.0 running E 85, I drive like a grandpop,,didn't have any where to be in a hurry,, got up early to get to work and i pressed the dreaded DIC button and looked at economy,,,,I was happy to see that i was getting 8.1!! WOOT!! Allot better that 7.1 pulling my 23 foot trailer!!

I was doing some digging around on the web and came across a number of papers where a study was done with a variety of vehicle brands and ethanol blends of E10, E15, E20, E30, E40 and E85. There was a mpg curve that occurred with various blends, with E20-E30 being a blend that exhibited virtually the same mpg as running non ethanol fuel in Chevrolet flex engines. I decided to give it a try on my week off vacation time this last week, since I have access to some retail blender pumps that have E30 as an option. I got virtually the same mpg as using regular 87 gasoline. But the cost was about $.30 a gallon cheaper. It is worth a try, if one can locate a blender pump near them.

Wow, this is an old thread, but still gets some posts once in a while. After reading other posts, my 14.6 in mixed driving with my new 2014 2500HD sounds pretty good. Especially with a 4.10 axle. Am wondering if Mobil One oil will help at my first oil change.

The brand of oil used is negligible when calculating MPG.

Just bought a 2013 2500HD with the 6.0l ,it was the dealerships demo and has 30,000 km on it. A recent trip I took I was able to achieve 16.25 MPG , thats mainly flat highway with some hills and cruise set at 100 kmh. the DIC computer is way off both on fuel used and fuel left. I know this is I set my 'fual used" to zero on fill up then when I refueled I compared the DIC to my original receipt and it was a difference of 20 liters. with those calculations the DIC tells me 13mpg which would have made it impossible to reach my destination before refueling.

Hi,

I just bought a 2007 2500HD Classic Silverado. I have filled it up a couple of times now and the mileage is terrible. The first fill up was a mix of Highway and City, about 50/50, I got 9.82 MPG. The 2nd fill up was all city driving and i got 7.9 MPG. This is all with the truck empty, haven't towed with it yet. The truck has 170,000 KM's on it and i have no service records other than oil changes for it. Any recomendations of what I can do to hopefully get this thing up to 10 MPG city.

Update on my mpgs,, still at 8-8.2, took the wife's car to the dealer for some work,, talked again to a different service manager and told him my mpg's, he tells me to expect 4-5 mpg difference in E85 compared to 89 oct. That's the highest figure I have heard yet..
I am bringing the truck in to the dealer next week to finally get one of my free oil changes and this manager said he will perform a complete performance test on my engine. He agrees that the mpg's seem low, but also added the fact that it's a truck!! (thanks Capt obvious),
