Hi everyone. First of all Merry Christmas !
I'm new to the forum and looking at buying my first Chevy in 8 years. My ultimate would be a '90 454 SS but i haven't had a whole lot of luck finding one for the price range I'm in. So I've found what appears to be a '98 350 SS. I have my doubts and have seen the decals online for as little as $20 a pack. Researched a little and am not finding any info on it. I'm hoping you guys can help me out with this and verify the truck.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Justin

Yep. Just a sticker add-on. Chevy did make the SS in Mexico long after they stopped in the US. But that one is definitely not legit. If the truck is pretty clean I wouldn't run away from it...but don't pay any kind of premium for an "SS" because it's not real.

I do love the "SS" look, but they didn't even go the full blackout look like it should be. I was close with my old 94 Z71 with the full blackout and "sport" emblems.

Did they even make an SS in an ext cab?

OP, not to bash on your dreams, but at this point in time, with the automotive advancements that have been made over the last several decades, are you SURE, you'd like to have an old SS right now?

Sure they were great when they came out. They were fast as can be, THEN, for what they were. Now, you can add a better engine, that will respond better, and get much better mpg. You can swap it in with A LOT of readily available knowledge for much less than what you are going to find a true SS for.

You could buy a clean body/roller even a driver, and swap in a much better LS engine for far less than what you will buy an SS for. If you had to ask if this one was a true SS, can I ask why you really want one? You're going to pay 2-3 times as much for a vehicle that is 1 in probably several thousand, when you can build a better vehicle for less. At this point in time, it just seems like anyone who has a good one, is going to keep it kept indoors to not lose money on it. If its anything other than a show piece, it just doesn't seem worth it.

Maybe I don't see it as a collector, but you are going to pay 3 times as much, for 30+ year old technology, when you can build it better with 20 year old technology and 20 years of experience for less money.

Not until 2003.

The 454 SS never was a fast, one, per se, with only something like 230hp or what ever. Had 380-ish torque, though. Still, a GMT800 5.3 truck almost beats it out of the box.

If I was a collector, I probably would like to have one in my collection.

Yeah, NBS.

25- 30 years ago it was quick for a pickup. Personally, now its just a 8mpg slug. Even compared to a NBS I don't see how this engine stands up. If you had this 6500 budget, a stock NNBS would make an OBS SS look geriatric in so many ways. I'm not bashing on OBS either, I like em, but not this, ANY MORE.

Damn. That's alot said. I like the 454 simply for what it is. I do realise the engine does not stand up to today's in any way. Honestly I won't pay that much for a truck I'm going to work. Although I would for the right price. I lived everything about the 454. Thought 8t was a stunner. I didn't think in any way they made a SS ext cab lol. but had to ask the question. I'm looking for a nice Silverado/Sierra single cab of around the same age. Low price and drop a new motor in it. I'm going to work it so I'll get it painted and put a box liner in it. Not having a whole lot of luck and came across this. Definitely doubted it but 8ts a nice Chevy regardless. I do lose 2' on the box though which in my case is a big decision.

The SS in the NBS body style was 03-06, only an ext cab, AWD, with the 6.0L. There is also POWERMAX which rarely some pickups came with the 6.0. There was a Denali pickup, quadrasteer, etc..

Personally, I like the exterior of the OBS, but not a fan out of the outdated, (even when it was new) interior.

Not sure if you would even consider an NBS (99-06/07) body style, but if you're going to drop in a newer engine, (unless you already have it sitting around), its probably going to be the one that already comes in an NBS. You're going to spend a little more to convert it then to just drop it right in. A decent regular cab NBS should be easier to find then a good OBS single cab. For the price of what you were looking at, you can find a better than average NBS regular cab.

The brakes and engine are going to be easier to upgrade from newer/similar models. I think you have quite a few more "easy factory upgrades" on an NBS model. There is more aftermarket options, there are more still out there.

If you really want an OBS, COOL! If you're not 100% certain, you really should look into an NBS reg cab, and see what your options are. If you know what your plans are, we can give you a quick rundown of what to expect.
