About to buy a 2002 Silverado 2500HD to tow our camp trailer

Okay, so I'm a totally newbie. I'm contemplating buying a very clean looking 2002 Silverado 2500HD. The truck is spotless and has 95000 miles on the od. It has the 6.0L V8. Extended cab and shorter bed. The truck seems to run and drive well. I'm looking for advice on what to look for to know if the truck is as good as it looks. Are there things I should expect from a 9 year old chev? What is the lifespan on these things? I'm hoping to get a few years out of it towing my camp trailer up the mountains of Utah, and home repair stuff on the weekends. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. What typical repairs should I start saving for? Is it good, or should I run away.

Thanks in advance

Well I have an 01 gmc 2500hd with the 6.0 This truck has towed our 9500lb travel trailer with little problem. We have not really had any issues with ours, blower fan has stopped working on 1 or 2 but simple fix to be done. Some of our dash lights have burnt out not a big deal to us. With only 104K on ours i feel that there is alot of life left in it. You will not like the fuel mileage , we get about 10-13 unloaded and about 5-9 loaded. If the truck is clean and if it has been serviced on the regular I would say go for it. Good luck with your decision.

What is the weight of the camper you will be pulling and how often? Like gmc2500hd said the milage is poor when loaded so depending on the size of the travel trailer you plan to pull you might want to think about a duramax.

Hope this helps you out. I just bought A 2002 2500HD Sierra 4x4 with the 6.0L, ext.cab & long bed 82K on it. So far I am very happy with it. I towed my approx 4000.00lb boat with no effort at all. Like they said above the mileage isn't that great. Mine had some known problem's that were corrected by the previous owner. He replaced the transfer case at 60 some thousand miles. GM had a problem with the pump inside the transfer case wearing through the case itself. He also changed part of the steering linkage & the Pitman arm, again a known GM problem. I have only had the truck about a month so far but it is fun to drive looks great. I have no regrets. The only down side is the gas mileage. Mine is not a daily driver. It is real hard (for me anyway) to keep your foot off the throttle.

Previous owner also installed a leveling kit ( torsion bar keys ) which really adds to the way t he truck looks.

I have a 2001 2500HD with the 6.0, Ext. cab, long bed. It was an oil field truck before I bought it, so I'm sure it was treated pretty rough. So far, I've replaced a wheel bearing and the starter, and the radiator was replaced at time of purchase, minor repairs really, considering its past. I've had it for a little under 3.5 years, I've put over 40k miles on it, soon to be hitting 150k miles, and it still runs like a champ. I've pulled a 35' trailer up into the mountains of AZ in the summer heat in the upper 90's, and just kept an eye on the tranny temp. Got a little warm, but had no problems with it.

Right now we have small 20' trailer. Loaded with all our crap, it might be 4,500lb. We want to move up to a 24' or 26' trailer and haul 2 4 wheelers. Hopefully nothing more that 7 to 8,000lbs.

I have a 14 footer I pull with my 5.3 and didn't even notice it was there. Haven't checked mileage, though.

It wouldn't hurt to have a trusted mechanic go through it and I would dump all of the fluids unless you know the complete history of the truck.

It should handle just fine. i know my dads old truck was a 94 Chevy 2500HD with the 454 and it pulled our old and heavy 29FT 5thwheel up trappers loop, and through the canyons we got like 10MPG is all and it slowed us down to 25 uphill but the truck has 300K on her. the newer chevy should do just as good, if not better than that.
