Automatic shut down on overheat?

Hello all,
I'm looking to buy a 2003 2500HD with the 6.0L. The guy said the instrument cluster doesn't work (probably something a little soldering could fix), and it overheated it till it shut down. My question is will the computer shut the engine down before major damage occurs, or will it go till it locks up?
Thanks for your help.

Is the truck dirt cheap, as in $1000 or something that you are interested in it? I would expect to have to replace the engine soon... And IP not working, do not count on it being something "simple", if nothing on it works, as that is pretty unusual...

I was driving on the highway when one of the rad hoses rubbed against the fan, and lost all the coolant. I didn't notice until I got to my destination (about 15 min), but the temp went up, but the engine didn't shut down or report any warning. It was a cold day (-25C) which probably helped, but I would expect if the engine overheats until it shuts down, the engine needs, or will soon need, a bunch of fixing.

I'm not saying don't buy it, but expect to replace the motor (say, with a used engine from a wrecked truck), and to have to spend some time finding wiring problems (if you're lucky, just swapping in a another IP will work, with whatever random mileage that IP has).
