Blew power steering hose

Hello everyone, it's been a long time since I've been on here. Work, girlfriend, school, etc take up time.

Anyway I had a bit of an incident today. The power steering return line (I'm pretty sure) to the rack and pinion completely blew off when I started the truck. I started it like normal then pretty soon a groan from under the hood and red fluid everywhere. I almost shit my pants since the first thing I think of when I see red fluid is atf.

Back story: Every time I start the truck for a while now it would make the same groan I got when the line blew but for just a split second. Also the rack and pinion has a bit of a drip so I added Lucas power steering stop leak a few weeks ago.

I'm just wondering if this could be a bad hose or is the pump toast? Or is it the rack and pinion? Also the fluid was very foamy when it came out. Not sure what that means.

It's kind of hard to tell but you can see the fitting that goes into the rack and pinion where the hose blew off.

It sounds like your pump is ducking air from somewhere. Double check the hose installation to ensure that all of the clamps are tight and that the hoses are still in good condition. The power steering pump should be fine as long as it wasn't run dry for several minutes or miles. If those all check out fine.....then yeah....the pump may need to be replaced

From the rack is LOW pressure side, from the rack to the cooler then back to the pump.

You cannot replace just the cooler hoses, they're crimped at the cooler. It comes as one
unit with the hoses. I replaced mine last month, found one for $50.00 on eBay, OEM, not
aftermarket.

Yeah, it gets foamy when returning from the rack.

Mine popped a hole in the cooler, at the top, right at the loop...
IT was foamy... I replaced the cooler, and used ATF+3 as PS fluid, and it's
smoother than it was...

Lines to the rack from the pump are high pressure lines, tougher to fix, best to replace.

IF the hose blew off, then it's the return side because they're snap-clamped, the high
pressure side are fittings. The hose to the FAR LEFT, in your picture, is a fitting. The
one to the right with the clamp, is the return, to cooler line, low pressure. You can put a
regular band clamp on and tighten them, both ends if you had to.

So you're saying the hose that blew off is the return line from the cooler correct? It was on that nipple there with just a spring clamp. I couldn't get the damn spring clamp to move for the life of me so after screwing with it for a long time I cut it off. It attempted to put the hose back on with zip ties to see if it would hold but it did not and did the same thing. I now know it's too much pressure for zip ties. What are you saying would be the cause of this though? Is it some kind of blockage in the cooler? Or is the hose just bad? I also looked up reviews for Lucas stop leak and someone had the same problem as me, they took out some fluid and replaced most of it with Lucas and when it was somewhat cold his hose blew off. Maybe it's just the Lucas?

Only the low pressure side lines are spring clamped on. I used a pair of small vice-grips to open
and hold the spring clamps to pull the hoses off. The high pressure side lines are fittings, like
brake lines, you need wrenches to get them off. When my cooler went, i got a universal cooler
as a temporary fix, and I used band clamps on transmission hose, and it worked fine till I found
an OE cooler.

THAT was just temporary...

The hose could also be blowing off because of other reasons:
A hose collapses or kinks when hot, so the pressure build up blows it off.
There is blockage in the cooler, thus pressure builds up and the hose blows off at the rack.
There is a blockage at the pump side, thus that top return line blows off.

This is the return at the rack, spring clamped:

So I got a couple new worm gear type clamps and reattatched the line and filled with new regular fluid. No more groan on start up, the pump sounds fine, and the line stayed. It seems to me it was the lucas being too thick and not being able to flow well. And its been in the 40s-50s in Michigan. Just a forewarning if you're thinking of using it. I would advise against it.

I doubt the problem is the hoses. Most of the time, if the hose has a problem, it leaks. If the pump whines, it's either because the pump is failing, or it's having to work too hard because the PS gear or hydroboost (if you have it) are making it work too hard.
