Cheapest Way to Disable AFM

What is the cheapest way to disable the active fuel management? I dont really want a tune since they run over $400 USD. Some handheld tuners run around the same price. How can I disable it for the most cost efficient way possible?

Most use the The Range Technologies AFM Disable device.

https://rangetechnology.com/afm-disabler/

Also available on Amazon.com for about $20 less.

Or keep an eye on the "For Sale" section as they pop up on there fairly regular for the $100 - $120 price range.

Your other option is to get a used tuner and go that route. You should be able to pick up a used Diablo Sport Itune for around $200 and it is a lot more convienient than having to have the range device plugged in.

would need at least an inTune i2 i2030, then would have to pay diablosport the extra $50 fee to have the ECM unlock key generated to be able to tune that 2017 truck..

or would need an inTune i3 8246 Platinum tool..

You can pick up a used intune for around $200- $250. As Lew mentions....newer trucks require a $50 fee to unlock for those trucks. Then you can use that to turn it off. Add an extra $150 and get a custom tune from Lew for a very nice set up the canned tunes cannot do.

Not the cheapest....but most end up ditching the range and getting a custom tune at some point. You can do it in stages and get the custom tune later. That is what I did.

Yep, I use the range for a couple years and sold it off and got the Itune and a custom LEW tune. I don't part with $$$ easily and I am very happy with what I have now.

Dont go cheap...go Lew. Makes the drivability so much better.

Yes it does matter which one you get. If you get an old one it might not have the proper software version yours needs. If you have a 2017+ then you need the newest version. Just you can still buy a used one and send it to range for free and they can load the newest software.

I'm not trying to be a wise guy or anything, just curious. Why do you want to deactivate AFM? Does it cause problems under certain circumstances? I had cylinder deactivation on my 2015 and had no problem but I only used my trailer once with that truck. My new truck has AFM and I haven't even noticed it working, but then I only got to drive it less than two months before I was rear ended.

Long history of AFM causing premature catastrophic failure on our motors. It seems to have gotten better with the change in valve cover in 2011, but if you read a lot of posts on here, you will find that when a member has a problem with certain cylinders on his motor, it is typically cylinders 1 and 7 which are AFM cylinders.

GM has a TSB on the problem.

Beside, you bought an 8 cylinder truck, you should have them all the time. Or not and try to save a half mile per gallon or so.

Besides that, many find the constant in and out of v4 mode annoying, similar to gear hunting.

I always disable the DOD/AFM in my custom tuning. it helps with better throttle response... disabling it also stops an oil burning issue that it causes every time it switches modes, which was even acknowledged by GM in a technical service bulletin... as well as failed lifters due to the afm/dod operation.

plus, a lot of people actually end up getting a little better mileage with it off, or stay about the same anyway, once the tune is done and things are dialed in...... DOD/AFM only helps you if you do a LOT of highway driving, all the time... other than that, like city or around town, nah it doesn't help with anything... it has more negatives than positives.

Yah, the only way you will get a mileage increase is with long highway drives on flat roads and usually under 70mph. Otherwise the system is on and off constantly.

You can also get a fluttery sound that is amplified with aftermarket exhaust when in v4 mode.

I ran mine for a while with it....and the previous owner put on 92k before I got it and kept AFM active.

Cheapest: Drive in M5 (for the 6 speed) or M7 (for the 8 speed). That prevents AFM from engaging.

Low cost: Range device

Best: A Lew tune. Not cheap but worth every penny. Really wakes-up the truck and makes it drive like it should have from the factory.

I currently have the range afm obd plug in for my truck, won't need it once the truck gets tuned in the coming weeks. I'll sell it to the OP for a good price if you're interested. PM me if you want

This is your OPINION...............not fact. OP needs to make his own choice.
This whole forum is about opinions. Even saying GM is better than F0rd is an opinion. There are very few irrefutable facts pushed on this forum. Some opinions are more widely held than others, but still just opinions.

Well... you have a "hybrid", with that electric e-Assist/auto stop-start crap, which can't be tuned... so you have nothing to compare it to... It IS a fact that the custom tuning makes a big difference and makes the performance and driveability MUCH better than stock... again, on a normal gas vehicle...

I'm sorry I said my new truck has AFM, actually it has DFM. I'll get to check it out on the trip to Ohio in June when I take mom home. My 2015 had the AFM I enjoyed getting 24.8 mi to the gallon on that trip ( that was it's best ever) and that was at 75 - 80 MPH. The only driveablity issue I had with that truck was, it had a locker differential and it would buck in a tight left turn at low speed, once in a while I would mash the accelerator coming out of the turn and the truck would hesitate.
The new truck has none of those problems.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
