Cluster only works with OBDII plugged in

Hi all,

I have a 2001 Silverado 2500HD that I'm trying to resurrect and have a funky electrical problem. The entire instrument cluster: gauges, odometer and PRNDL will intermittently go out and stay out. Back light illumination works fine, turn signals work, and the check engine light will flash quickly when starting.

I was playing around looking at wiring this week and found that when I plug my Bluetooth OBDII scanner in, the cluster magically comes to life and will remain so until I unplug it. Another symptom is that granted the cluster works with OBDII plugged in, the scanner says it can't connect with the vehicle.

Thoughts? I'm thinking it's a ground issue and the scanner is completing a ground path. Where should I look? Thanks in advance.

I just bought a 2000 Silverado same issue. I just put a small jumper wire on the code reader connector pins that are closest together and it works fine. I will further diagnose the issue tomorrow and post results.

Oh, you connected two pins on the OBDII connector, and that resulted in the IP getting a power or ground connection that it wasn't before... It kind of sounded like you were getting OBDII codes on the IP by connecting two pins together (which worked on earlier trucks, but doesn't on GMT800s).

I would suggest finding where the real problem is, as the wires to the ODBII connector weren't designed or expected to be carrying that power to the IP.

Most likely the problem is the larger wires where they are soldered into the cluster. Pull the cluster, used a hot iron and touch each of the terminals and add a bit of fresh solder. You can usually see the terminals with the problem, as there is a ring around the wire in the solder. Easy job.
