Connecting truck to external Wi-Fi - why?

I get the potential advantages of having on-board Wi-Fi so that devices can be connected while on the road. None of those advantages are applicable for me though. But, I see that the truck can also be connected to an external Wi-Fi such as your home internet or even your phone's hotspot. But what is the purpose for that? Is it so that, if you do not subscribe to the GM data plan, you can still download over the air updates? Does it also enable the Google connected services as well?

Okay, but can I connect it to my hotspot on my phone and use subscription services like Google using that data while I'm driving instead of purchasing a separate data plan? The main issue I'm struggling with is that the speed sign display in my truck no longer displays speed limits. I've been told that "maybe" it's because it requires a data subscription to function. But then I've been told it doesn't. And I've been told by others that theirs works while connected to their phone's wifi (mine does not work or hasn't so far when connected that way). I really like that feature but not enough to pay a monthly fee just for that, when I have a phone with unlimited data and hotspot capability.

ehhhh, more-so that it makes your life easier and makes keeping your security systems up to date to keep others out of your truck, safety systems and operating systems also need to be kept up to date. There is a reason your phone OS, computer OS, and just about any other software based device requires updates. GM does not care about you as an individual, they don't care where you go or what you do. The HSVT (Telemetry data) you agree to share or not share with OnStar/GM is for the black box in case GM has to recover it in event of catastrophic failure so they can determine what happened (what was going on when X happened). It also allows them to see what features people are using and new ways to implement safety features so they can tailor experiences to the masses.

Data collected by google just adds to the folder they already have of you soo.... I made you a gift

You can, and the local speed limit should display.

Try using Apple Carplay/ Android Auto, if the speed limits are displaying you know permissions are set correctly. Your phone hotspot may be limiting what services are available to connected devices. I agree if you are already paying for cell service like that you do not need to pay OnStar money too.

I didn't say I don't care about online privacy but don't care about the types of things OnStar might be tracking, like where I am or how fast I'm going, or whatever. I do think Google over reaches with what they collect on virtually anyone and everyone but if they aren't adding to their pile on me while in the truck, I'm sure they are getting plenty on my computer or phone. It's the world we're living in.

@CarolJ Perhaps read the owners manual for your truck, whatever it might be? For newer trucks, GM may also make separate entertainment manual available... If you don't have the paper versions, GM makes them available for free as a pdf from their website.

I have my phone connected through CarPlay but the white speed limit sign isn’t displaying so the manual on that.

But, can you have the Google map on the right section of the screen display without a data plan? When I have the radio on the main section of the display, I usually have the clock on the right but I’d like to have the map showing. Right now it just shows the arrow but no map.

I don’t have a data plan purchased with the truck either.

Google sucks. Forced to buy a data plan through OnStar (owned by GM) to use features on my new (4/4/23) 2022 Silverado. Then told that all apps have to be downloaded from the Google Play Store (not mentioned at the dealership). The playstore does NOT have Pandora on it so it cannot be downloaded to the Infotainment system. Most of the downloads from Google are useless and are of no value at all. I did not purchase an overpriced truck and a Data plan to have Google control every aspect of the truck. Neither the dealership, GM, or OnStar care a bit.
BTW, the dealership out and out lied about other aspects of the truck.

Do tell.....Curious to know exactly what they lied about......And why you didn't do your "due dilligence" to challenge the dealer, so you were informed, prior to purchase...

And Google does suck...and now the federal government is buying the meta data from them.
I noticed in the last android update that in order to (continue to,) use android auto, location services needs to be enabled. This was not the case a month ago...

When I asked about "adapted cruise control", the salesman pointed to the controls on the steering wheel and said that the truck had it. It does not. It has regular cruise with a stupid following distance indication which can only be seen on a particular DIC screen which takes your attention off of the traffic in front of you to let you know how many seconds you are behind them. It is absolutely useless.
As far as challenging the dealership, I,m still in the process which is also useless as they don't return calls. Neither does GM customer service. Last GM ever!!!

I did test drive the truck and it drives fine. However, there is now place in Pensacola other than the interstate to get the truck up to high speed to engage the cruise control. I was absolutely the fool for believing a car salesman when he was asked directly about the cruise control. He pointed to the controls on the steering wheel and positively indicated that it had adapted cruise. GM's version of a following indicator is a joke that requires the driver to take his eyes off of the road to see how far in seconds you are following the vehicle in front of you..

Then there is the issue of the data plan not allowing you to download Pandora to the infotainment system. The dealership (which finally called me back) said that GM does not allow some apps to be downloaded for fear of a virus.

GM has now made the stickers very vague and misleading by "additional equipment may be required" .
