Hello,

I recently went to do an alignment and was told that my upper and lower ball joints are bad. Unfortunately GM doesn't make replacement ball joints for the stock control arms do I'll have to purchase new ones. The shop quoted me $900 for the full job but I feel I can have this done cheaper... Anybody have any recommendation's for control arms (upper & lower) which are good but not too steep. If possible provide me with a site, brand or locations as to where I can purchase. Want to get this taken care of ASAP, wouldn't want my front suspension giving out on me considering I tow my boat around almost every weekend.

It's an 08 Silverado Crew Cab LT 5.3L V8. Not flex fuel.

Thank you,

doing it yourself is much cheaper.. u can rent a ball join press/removal tool from autozone will set u back 100bucks to start.. i know ur gonna hate me but duralast ball joints were 30 apeice for my truck.. leave the control arms on the truck when doint it with the manual press. much much easier u do not have to fight to hold the control arm in place.. if u take it off its gonna be a pain holding the control arm and turning the press. i suggest leaving it on and having the truck itself hold the arms while u turn the press .. very simpe to do maybe an hour tops on each side.

Yes, but it was a pretty good video. The only thing I would have done differently would be to do the final torque of the control arm to frame bolts after the truck was on the ground (or use a lift jack stand to push the control arm to it's "normal" position). Torqueing them with them in the dropped position is hard on the rubber control bushings because it has them in a bind most of the time.

Yah, digging up an old thread here, but it was an interesting video. Only I would have preferred voice instruction over or in addition to the written instructions. Never been real big on background music for an instructional video....I guess I am old school. Otherwise, good camera work and makes me want to go out and wiggle my control arms.

I agree that it is a PIA to do the videos, but they are so much more informative than simple photos. Shaun clearly puts a lot into his and I applaud him for that. It is a big benefit to everyone else. They don't have to be all fancy and edited, but it helps.

And, Shaun, I don't really want to you waste time redoing that Control Arm video. It does it's job perfectly. I was just nit picking. If it had been a crappy video without much value, I wouldn't have even bothered to critique it. But it was informative and good.

The other day a fellow list member PM'ed me with a question on how to do something. I started to write up a description, but after a few sentences, I found that it would clearly be able to run a short video showing exactly what I was trying to say in 10,000 words. Even a few pictures would not have been able to say what the 20 second video said.
