Sounds like your cluster is going out. I believe there are stepper motors and diodes that fail frequently on those.
There is a body control module mounted beneath the steering column that also controls some of those functions as well.

First thing to do, in my opinion (since I don't like buying parts unless necessary), with any strange electrical problem is to:
Make sure the battery cables are as tight as can be to the battery.
Make sure there is no corrosion on the battery connections.
Disconnect the battery negative cable for a few seconds and reconnect tightly.
Make sure the cables are good.
Check the major grounds from the battery to the engine/body.
Check the battery.

If that does not fix the problem, it is time to get behind the dash and look at connectors. Problem is, intermittent electrical problems are the biggest PITA to troubleshoot. However, those older clusters, as noted by Chucktheduck, can be trouble.
