So I was thinking about purchasing the new Diablo Predator X wireless tuner. I know this is pretty new but any pro's or con's of something using this for a GM 5.3L?

I would be using it on my 2015 GMC Sierra 1500, 5.3L.

Thanks.

Haven't heard of such thing, but just now quickly Googled it and sounds like just another Diablosport tuner, but with the OBD2 dongle and you use your phone for the activities instead of the handheld unit with cable. Convenient, maybe, but I'd probably stick with an old-school model.

Maybe Lew @06MonteSS can comment further if it can do the same stuff as the others.

I beg to differ. The tune that Lew did to my 5.3 and 6 speed made a HUGE difference in drivability. For high power racing type stuff I could see a using a local custom guy, but for instant gains and having a code reader when your'e done I think a Lew tune is excellent. . .

Yes, the Predator-X is a new, wireless, blue-tooth dongle that you connect to your OBD port, and then you'd download/install the Predator-X app on your Android or iPhone cell phone... And the Predator-X app on your cell phone communicates via blue-tooth with the OBD dongle to select/install preset canned tunes, read/clear trouble codes....

I will not be selling this...

It can not do custom tuning...
and just like the regular Predator 2 tool, it has limited adjustability/functionality compared to the full-function inTune i3 8245 Platinum or the Trinity T2 EX 9245 Platinum, which is what you would want for your 2015 truck...

I can definitely get you hooked up with a correct version inTune or Trinity programmer and a full custom tune for your truck with one of my package deals, which includes my custom tuning service at a discount...

You can email me directly at: diablo DOT help AT gmail DOT com

-Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I saw your website and from everyone around I see and hear you are the person to use. Are there any types of discount to get the price down from the $590 that is listed? That is one reason why I was looking at the Predator X because the price is significantly less but I also see and understand you can't do custom tunes and that does not provide your tune, I get it.

Yeah, it's a lot of money, but the difference is definitely worth the price of the admission. Before I went with my first Lew tune quite a few years ago, I thought my truck was performing very good. Little did I know how things would change...

Surprisingly, even my wife who couldn't care less about stuff like this, has always been impressed by the change when I've gotten the tune for her SUVs. And no, Lew doesn't pay me a dime to say these things. :ROFLMAO: I'm just a happy customer of his.

Yeah, I have. So far 1st tuner was defective, 2nd tuner will not build tunes although it recognizes vehicle. Approximately 2.5-3 hrs on phone with tech support, and 1 day waiting on engineering to find a solution. Completed mechanical AFM delete Mar 6. today is Mar 11, and still trying to get this thing tuned, and out the door. 11.5 hrs to tear down and replace cams lifters and all gaskets, fluids, and 6 days (at close today) trying to have tuned. I normally send ecm's to a guy and have tuned for $50 +shipping, but it takes a week. LOL! should have just stayed with what worked. this predator x was well over $50 and it isnt any quicker so far. close of business today it is going back, if engineering hasnt remedied.

No was assured by AMS Racing, and Diablosport that the Predator X, would accomplish what was needed. Customer requested it as with my typical delete jobs ECM is sent off for tune and AFM delete. An attempt at saving time, by request, but will return to using what works without fail, or need for any tech calls or waiting on engineering. supposed to be "canned" basic tunes, with a small amount of customization. AFM delete being the important one.

Yup. And based on his post and screen name, it seems he is in the auto repair business which makes this whole thing sound even more strange. Doesn’t sound too professional of an operation to me if he doesn’t know you can’t do the delete tune with a basic handheld thingy.

From looking at the predator x page on diablo's website, I would guess, at best, it would have something to disable afm from activating. It looks like a relatively cheap canned tune dohickey.

Why not buy your own tuning interface?
EFI Live or HP Tuners
It's a 10 minute job to read the tune, disable DOD and codes, license ECM and flash updated tune.
It is in the plans, but haven't decided which route would be best. Not interested in tuning other than AFM, and torque converter issues. have been researching HP Tuners, but their rates are really not all that great for what we need. also researching a few others, and we will eventually do our own, but for now the diablosport was a one time thing at customer request which we will not be willing to do again. haven't looked into EFI live, but we will. Thanks for the lead.

Sorry I have missed this guys. I have the Predator X it does AFM delete just fine. It has 3 preset canned tunes for the ecm and 2 preset tcm tunes. Both allow you to customize things like torque management, afm delete, manual shift 2-3 override, tire size, rev limit, speed limiter, shift rpm pt/wot, shift pressure pt/wot, tow haul shift rpm / line pressure. For the price and for what it accomplishes I’m a very happy owner of this product. I don’t really need anything more than what this thing does in my truck. I hope this helps those out who are wondering about the predator x. Also I was told that the plans are to add features that will allow people to purchase options for custom tunes like the intune allows, but right now you can go with the customizations on the canned tunes or you can also modify the stock ecm/tcm tunes with the options I mentioned above. If you are on a budget and want afm gone then this works perfect. If you have customizations below the heads then spend the extra money and get a custom tune from Lew. Good luck guys!

Are you sure of that? It appears to be a relatively cheap handheld tuner for canned tunes. I would guess it's more likely it just does a disable, and not a delete. There's a difference.

Well i am positive it is not active but no it of course doesnt physically delete the afm. It completely turns it off and in my book that qualifies as a delete generally speaking. The only true way to ā€œdeleteā€ it is to remove it and canned or custom tune doesn’t really matter when it comes to that does it?

#39 Ā·
The only time a canned vs custom tune matters is on the newer trucks with the slightly different DFM system, I have heard in some instances where turning it off with a regular canned tune isnt always enough, and a custom tune must be written specifically to disable all the codes that come with a delete as well. Doesnt happen all the time, but have seen this on some of the newer trucks.

It's different. The o.p. is doing an actual delete, and was looking around for a cheaper/faster tuner to reprogram the ecm to do the delete in there after deleting the hardware.

Just disabling it prevents the system from activating, it may or may not prevent the lifters from failing, as they can and have failed whether the system is disabled or not.

Btw I’m aware of the difference of completely removing the afm function from the tables in a custom tune as opposed to Just turning the function off/on, and to my understanding it’s just more or less something to clean up in the tuning tables for ease of tuning and data logging.

If I’m getting a full delete of hardware then a disabled afm function would serve the same purpose as completely removing afm from the code altogether.

And if you are not removing the hardware then disabling or deleting is still not preventing the hardware from failing. So is there really a difference??

I just received my PredatorX yesterday and it won’t sync to my phone and it says it’s not connected to WiFi or vehicle connection. It’s also saying to turn on my ignition but it is on and my wifi is on as well. Any idea how to fix this? Tech support doesn’t work till Monday 8-5 so I’m stuck till then and hopefully they’ll answer my emails. i drive a 2017 GMC Sierra 6.2L
