E85 Pros/Cons

Hello all...

Quick question...I own a 2012 GMC Sierra 5.3L with just over 20K on it. Been tempted to try E85 since it's around $.70/gal cheaper then gasoline in my area.

I know the first CON of E85 is poor mileage...I drive my truck 110 miles daily...So that may be a factor.

BUT...Are there any PROS to E85 ?? Better performance ?? Etc.

Thanks !!!

back in 2008 when gas went thru the roof, decided to run E85 in our 07 Tahoe we had at the time since it was still subsidized at that point-almost $1 per gall less...Tahoe ran fine but there were 2 downsides, mileage around town dropped 3mpg & our garage smelt like moonshine...haven't used it since but if gas went north of $4 a gallon again & E85 was around $3, I'd be tempted to try in my 11 Silverado...

I used e85 exclusively the first two years I had my truck and I love it! The only reason I don't now is due to the price spread in my area sucking badly. Normally you get 15-20% drop in mileage, but if it's priced right the cost-per-mile works in your favor. It's really a balancing act. It's American made, 105 octane, burns cooler and cleaner and is (IMO) the best alternative to foreign oil-based fuels.

AngryRussell is those prices for 87 or 91 im paying 4.29 here in central cal for 91 and 3.29 for e85
Sorry for the delayed reply - those prices were for regular 87... I didn't even want to see what premium was going for.

Prices have come down considerably since I originally posted.. Currently $3.69 for 87 octane. It's crazy how much prices can fluctuate like that.

85 octane is considered "regular" instead of 87 octane at altitudes over 4400 ft, it doesn't cost any less though!! Going to give E85 a try once I run out the gas in my 11 Silverado...it's .70-.80 cents per gallon cheaper here in south Denver now...

You can get 85 there, damn I didn't know they even made that. Here in pa the price spread is .20. Its 3.49 for 87 and 3.29 for e85.
Yeah, at higher altitude it is (apparently) the equivalent of 87 octane at sea level. Almost all of Colorado has 85, 87, and 90. There is no 92/93 grade like you see on the east coast.

Esfkotaro, its probably illegal for stations to sell E85 in NJ like pumping your own gas is I heard

AZDragonLord, I love your Avatar, I want a sticker for my new truck if I get it, its an E85 truck :D

I plan to use it gladly if my vehicles support it and it isn't much more cost overall, on really long trips I will probably stick with dinosaur juice so I can go farther on a tank

Regular is about 3.99 here in Central Indiana

A couple of years ago I used Shell V-Power 93 octane exclusively in my 98 C5 Vette (when I had it) but I also got over 20 mpg in city and 27 mpg highway with 4 spd auto and high performance gearing, I miss those days for more than one reason.

Anybody ever check out this site for gas prices, gas buddy is kinda cool, they show costs average for all of USA

It is illegal to pump your own gas here. Gas is also generally much cheaper here than most other places. Only about 3.30-3.35\gal for regular by me right now, and we're usually higher than most of NJ.

Cheap gas is the only benefit to living in NJ, other than that it completely sucks. There are only 2 states I'd hate to live in more than NJ, and those are CA and NY.

I'm contemplating making alcohol to mix my own e85 though. Might be worth it.
