Erratic fuel gauge

I have a 2000 silverado 4.3l and just recently the fuel gauge will drop all the way to empty or half a tank while im driving or at idle. And this is after I have just filled up. The truck doesn't hesitate or anything like it's not getting gas, it's just the gauge acting erratic. Any clues on what this could be. All other gauges work fine.

Thanks for any help. texjfl

My 2000 sierra has been doing this for years. They say it is due to wore out contacts on the fuel gauge that is on the fuel pump which is in the tank. I just reset the trip meter when I fill up and go till about 300 miles or so and fill up again. I was going to fix it but never got around to it.

good luck

d_eggman2 is correct. My 03 Silverado did this too but unfortunately the gage stuck at a quarter tank for a couple of days and I ran out of gas on the highway. I got a new sending unit/fuel pump from GM, dropped the tank down and installed it in a hour or two. No problems since.

GM had a bulletin on this. The problem is the "wiper" on your fuel level sender gets some contamination on it with certain fuels. GM has a special cleaner you can add to the fuel tank to "clean" this part. I believe the bulletin mentions the part number but this stuff costs like 25 bucks a bottle. The easier way is to purchase some premium fuel from Shell or Mobil or any of the top tier fuel suppliers. It's also possible the wiper on your sender is worn too.

@schuppdogg89 You do realize that the post you quoted is from 13 years ago, right? Also, that member has not been on this site for 9 years.
