Hi all, new to the forum and after ordering (8 months ago), my Sierra Elevation with the premium and x31 off road pkg its finally on the train headed north to Edmonton. This is my first diesel, having a couple buddy get it with their 2020 and 2021 Sierra's so the info I've been reading here has been very hepful. I was wondering what everyone thoughts are on the extended warranty in with these trucks. I have never purchased one before but I should have with my current truck, (cough ford cough). With all the computers and electronics I am leaning towards getting the 6 year 140,000 km. I tend to keep vechiles 8 to 10 years if they are reliable and not costing me a ton in repairs.

Thanks

Congrats on your purchase! And for the truck finally heading your way.

I'm assuming it has the new version of the 3.0 which just recently became available. Hence, not a lot of experience as to how things progress when the initial warranty is up. But all in all, I think the 3.0s have been pretty reliable.

Whether the extended warranty is worth it or not depends a lot on how much it will cost you. And what it will cover. Of course it pays just one big issue to be taken care of, then it was well worth it. It could also be that you never needed it. But if you want that extra piece of mind, cost is reasonable and it has good coverage, by all means go for it. New trucks have more and more electronics and such that can go wrong, so the extra coverage could save your bacon. As long as you're not buying from a third party. Those are mostly waste of money.

Enjoy the new truck!

Just curious, how does a trade in value work when you have to wait nearly a year? Are you still driving the trade in and adding miles and use?

We have a 22 Elevation X31, crew cab standard bed with the LM2… black, with the midnight package. Have about 12k trouble free miles on it. In February we did a 3300-ish mile road trip from SC to CO and back, averaged about 25mpg… which, I think, is fantastic for a full size diesel. But this is my first ever diesel so I have nothing to compare it to. My 2010 5.3 was lucky to get 15mpg (leveling kit and 33s). I recently hauled 2 cubic yards of dirt (two trips with one cube at a time) which I’m sure exceeded payload capacity but that little Babymax just shrugged it off. I couldn’t be happier with this truck!

Take the extended warranty cost and put it in a 'self warranty' account.
Do this with everything you are considering (or used to ) buying extended warranty for.

If you have a failure, that would have been covered by the warranty -- you can use money from the account.
Otherwise it's hands off.

You'll have a nice nest egg at retirement time.

Don't forget that the 3.0 has a 5yr 160,000km powertrain warranty.
The rest has the same warranty as the gas engines.

The dealer might push you to buy the warranty. It is a HUGE profit margin for them. Sometimes you can negotiate the price. I would only consider it if it is thru GM (not a 3rd party) and I could get it at a substantial discount. Otherwise, like Farmguy says...

The extended warranties on both my 2015 Sierra's were well worth the price paid. I didn't know at the time I bought them that both trucks had the inferior GM factory installed torque converters. Plus the tranny fluid operating temp consistently running at 190 degF slowly helping to destroy them. It only cost me the $200 deductible to get the transmission repaired on each vehicle. It is a roll of the dice really. It paid off for me. Wait until you are close to the end of the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. If had several repairs under warranty, could be a sign the extended is needed. Very few repairs, maybe not. But, if going to purchase, do it while still under the factory b-to-b warranty.

Thanks for the responses, I have signed the paperwork and now just a short wait till I actually have the truck to drive. I ended up going for the extended warranty. I was able to negotiate a much lower price then originally quoted and after the experience I just came from with my 3.5 ecoboost a little piece of mind for the next 6 years will be welcome.

As for the trade value, I was guaranteed the price with a handshake agreement I would put an excessive amount of milage on the trade. The full trade value was given at the time of the completion of the sale
