Fram oil filters?

I’ve heard that there is something pretty bad about the newer Fram oil filters… What are your guy’s opinions on Fram oil filters? I’m looking to change the oil for the first time on my 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD with the 6.0. The previous owner used Quaker State oil so I’ll probably stick with that as to not change since from what I know it’s decent. I don’t want a dirt cheap oil filter, but moneys tight and the truck is junky so I don’t want to break the bank on an oil filter either. What are some good medium quality/priced oil filter brands in your guys’ opinions?

Like most parts, brands have several different quality levels for their parts, and fram is no different.

And Fram used to have a bad rep for their cheapest line, but that's long been improved, but the negative press still outweighs the positive.

If $10 for a oil filter breaks the bank for you, you got bigger problems. Fram, quaker state, mobil one, acdelco all make decent filters, especially the "synthetic" /higher quality levels for the brands that do that, and none are particularly expensive.

Check the County or City you live in and see if they have an oil filter recycle program. My County does twice a year for a month each time. You bring in an old used filter and they give you a new one (brand you bring in).
For me I use Baldwin filters and most auto parts stores participating in the program do not carry them so I ask for a Wix and they give me that!

Never heard of such a program. What state & county do you live in??? Who are the program sponsors???

When I was broke, I reset the oil life meter for another 7500 miles and those FRAM filters never failed me.

I use ACDelco and K&N filters with the 1 inch nut on the bottom nowadays because I can and the K&N makes removal easy for me.

I have used only used fram ultras, mobile one, wix or K&N.

Reading and watching videos it makes you want to for sure buy a filter that has a metal core. Couple that with good filtration and you would be fine. 197k miles strong and do 10k OCI

The Fram did have a bad rap back in the day, but now I do not know. I’ve been using ACDelco oil filters and at times Wix. But they’re all made in China aren’t they?!

I’ll either get Wix or Fram I think. I’ll have to look for non-orange Frams tho. I’ve only ever seen the orange ones in stores tho like spectrinier mentioned. I do know Wix is great. This truck is really junky tho. I will get Quaker State oil cause that’s what the previous owner used and I think it’s decent oil.

This shows the different quality levels for fram filters:
I'd stick with picking one from the top row or the first one on the second row, and not consider the last three in the second row.

This is from research done about six years ago, K&N is king.

I bought the oil and filter today. I actually ended up going with an ACDELCO GM filter because I assumed it had to be at least kind of good and it was shockingly cheap compared to others. I won’t do the oil change for a while cause the truck is stuck at our other property until I register/insure it, so if someone has a good reason why I should not have went with a GM filter, I can return it. Thanks for all of the opinions and knowledge so far.

I like ACDELCO anytime I can get it, it has a excellent reputation for quality. I order auto parts online quite often because of my location.
Anytime I get ACDELCO parts as a option I grab them ..... I put ACDELCO reman alternator on my 1949 Dodge truck.
You will not go wrong using them for your oil filter.

With all that said, I use wix oil filters. I buy my oil from walmart and they sell fram ..... So I buy my oil filter from my local auto parts store and they sell wix.

Where did you buy the filter? Nothing wrong with AC filters... as long as it's not a counterfiet.

That's why I like going to AutoZone, They have their oil filters pretty well organization out in the aisle. You can match up the bottom mating surfaces of the filters yourself, check the quality of the filter and yes even get a filter that has more capacity. I'll buy an Autozone or O'Reilly's filter over a Fram or a Purolator. Had a Purolator leak at a seam on me one time, I know, I know that's a one in a million chance of that happening but I Still feel doubtful and there are so many other brands to chose from....
I like this question...What do you feel More comfortable with, Amsoil oil and filter with 5000 miles on Them or O'Reilly's brand oil and filter with 500 miles on it?

BUT for sure, I will only buy a name brand that I recognize. Yes even a stores brand that I'm familiar with.
These are the filters I'm running right now: Delco (tall), Delco (tall), Honda, K&N.
