Well got my SMD LEDs the other day and set about to convert my test cluster to Red. I also wanted to see what White would look like as well. Since I am a big Pontiac fan, I really liked the Red / Orange back lighting that Pontiac used in so many of their cars over the past 30 plus years. The reason Pontiac chose this color was because they had a ex-military pilot as one of their engineers and he stated that red back lighting is what they used in the aircraft as it does not affect your night vision like other colors do. He also designed the first heads-up display for use in private vehicles which was showcased in the new 1989 Pontiac Turbo Grand Prix. I don't really care for the factory Blue/Green back lighting and as I said am slowly converting all my trucks back lighting to red. What I have done here is converted a testing cluster that I purchased over to red and white back lighting to see how it would look. My old Pontiac G8 had white back lighting for the numbers in the cluster and I wanted to see how that looked in this cluster. The results are shown in the pictures below. Although I will more than likely go with the red, I wanted to put up a poll and see what the SS.com population thinks. Anyway, onto the pictures:

Testing the installed SMD Red LED installation for large gauge:

So let me know in the poll what color you think you would want this cluster back lighting conversion to be. I will more than likely try out the red first, and then maybe later go with the white.

Yes, I think the camera settings are making it look more orange then red in this case. Even with your eyes it does look more toward the orange side than pure red.

I think what I will do is order some blue and green LEDs and try them out in this test cluster and see how that looks. Since it seems folks are interested in the blue color, might as well see what it would look like!

Will take a week or so to get the parts, so look for a follow-up on this with the blue and green colors!

All right, finished up the cluster conversion and here are some before and after pictures:

I have to admit it looks great and now all the dashboard and front window/lock switches are converted to Red color:

Red Color Headlight Switch (Modified with Acadia Headlight Switch so Fog light is activated by pressing the main rotary button and not the little side button under the brightness knob):

Red Color DIC Switches:

Red Trans Axle 4x4 Selection Switch:

Red Radio and HVAC Controls:

Red HVAC and Accessory Switches (Accessory Switches are from a fully loaded truck with Adjustable Pedals, Rear Parking Assist, Traction Control and Heated Windshield Washer Fluid which I changed out the LEDs to red ones):

Red Left Front Door Lock/Window/Mirror Switches (notice the Power Mirror Switch is lit up as well. This is not wired in by the factory but is included in the power mirror switch):

Here are shots of BLUE and GREEN in the instrument cluster:

Green LEDs in the right half of cluster:

And some other things I am working on as well:

Red Cruise Control Steering Wheel Buttons (Notice the Heated Steering Wheel button as well as the Gear Up/Down buttons on the side... I also put in red LEDs so the Gear Up/Down buttons light up at night as well):
IMG_3582.JPG

Red Radio Control Steering Wheel Buttons (I have not yet modified the Volume + / Volume - buttons so that they will light up at night as well. I am waiting on my order of PLCC2 Red SMD LEDs to come in):

Now something a little off topic for this thread but something I am also working on as well, Heads Up Display in my Sierra! Here are a few proof of concept shots for you to look over:

So there you have it! Almost done with a full red interior back lighting project / mod and some insight into adding a Heads-Up Display to our NNBS GMT-900 trucks! I am sure there will be some questions about all this so please feel free to post up and let me know what you think of the conversion and any other questions you may have about it. Also, the camara shots of the colors are a little washed out and in reality the colors are much deeper than the camera shots indicate. So even though it seems the red color is more orange, when you see it with your eyes, it is red. The Blue and Green shots are the same. The blue and green are much deeper color than the pictures indicate. Look at the reflection of the colors on the cluster bezel. This is more the true color you see with your eyes. But then again, color is very subjective so the color I see will be different than the color you really see.

Finished up with the steering wheel controls now. Notice the left hand side has the heated steering wheel button along with the Gear Up and Gear Down buttons. I wired these up to do the Volume Up and Down for the radio and wired up the Heated Steering Wheel button to function as the "Up Arrow" on the right side radio control to allow me to go to the next file on my USB drive. When I am driving with my wife I usually am holding her hand or something with my right hand making changing the radio difficult. I wanted to mimic more buttons as well since you only use the cruise buttons when you have cruise control on which is pretty rare for me. I need to work on allowing the cruise buttons to function as radio control buttons when they are not in use for the cruise control but I will figure it out. In any case, here are some pictures of the steering wheel control buttons replaced on the steering wheel with the red backlighting:

Right side with flash:

Right side with flash off so you can see the red backlighting and the Vol+ and Vol- buttons backlit as well:

Now the only thing to convert up front is rear sliding window button. It is up in the overhead console and taking it apart revealed it much like the door lock/unlock buttons (which use a light bulb with a blue rubber filter) but with higher current contacts. I will have to cut the blue rubber and then place the cut red rubber from a Acadia door lock/unlock switch in its place so it will light up red as well and not affect the current handling capabilities of the factory switch. More on that when I get the Acadia switch and do the modification. I will take pictures of that as well. So until then, thanks for all the kind words in your comments!

What leds do you use for all the buttons ?

Sure, the part number for the left side steering wheel control with the cruise control buttons, heated steering wheel button and the Gear Up/Gear Down side buttons is 25901034. It is from a 2008-2009 Hummer H2 and will fit into truck steering wheel with no modifications. However, the Gear Up / Gear Down and Heated Steering wheel buttons will not function without the proper harness and connections so it is not a swap and go operation.
