I have been running Mobile 1 5w-30 with Fram ToughGuard filters in my 03 Silverado (122,000 miles) for the last year and have always had steady oil pressure at about 40 PSI. There was usually only a 10 PSI flux when on the throttle hard, even in colder weather. I changed my oil last week and all of a sudden my pressure is fluctuating between 35 warm idle and 80 with the pedal to the floor. I swapped out the Fram filter with the OEM AC Delco filter after reading lots of posts online. This changed nothing. So my question is, is 80 PSI too high? And why would the psi all of a sudden start fluctuating so much (I have had the truck for 5 years and its never done this)?

I just got my truck about a month ago with 100,000 miles, and it was ready for an oil change, the pressure readings were between 40psi @idle , and 60@ regular driving, and about 70 when flooring it (parkway/freeway), After my oil change today i replaced 1qt of oil with Lucas, and 5qts wolfs head oil, now my readings are 40@idle, 60-70@ regular driving and 80@ when flooring it, every thing i read on it said that its fine as long as its not a constant thing. I'm still new to trucks this is my second one, my first one was a GM sonoma 4.3l and the oil pressure was all over the place in that truck, but i think its fine.

High oil pressure should not be a problem provided it isn't constant and you're not off the gauge. Also, the sensing unit is not a 100% accurate thing with an unlimited life span. I would not take the reading as the gospel.

Now if you happen to be reading 0PSI on occasion that might be a different story......

Those style trucks were known for bad gauge clusters. My dad has an 03 Yukon Xl With the 6.0 and oil pressure slowly dropped over time till it read 0. And the truck also ran at 300 according to the gauge. Well the dealer ended up fixing it for free. Now it runs a drop over 40 cold, drop under 40 warm and about 45 driving. My 2011 with a 5.3 runs almost 60 cold. Ideling when its warmed up is like 25-30 and 40 driving.
