Hill Start Assist Issue?

Hey, guys.......so sorry if this has been talked about a lot. Tried doing some research tho', & couldn't find anything related specifically to the issue I just had, or related in general to any open parts recalls or anything like that.

Basically, I just got home a little bit ago and was coming down the driveway to get to our house (just built a new house - driveway's not ideal to drive on yet - house is way off the road). Anyway, there's a couple spots where I go kinda' slow over a hump in the drive (s'pecially since it's been raining a lot lately - can't sling mud up on that new paint - haha). Well, this time I had a symptom I haven't seen with this truck yet. Just bought brand new in early December - got about 3,800 miles on it - tunes by DiabLew. Been running so good so far.

Anyway - as I was creeping over the hump, the truck kinda' came to a stop, & it felt like hill start assist kicked in as I took my foot off the brake, but when I gave it some gas, the tire did spin a tad, but it also felt like the transmission slipped, and then it slammed into gear pretty hard - like enough for me to say "Dang!" out loud.

Anyone experience this yet? When it happened, it did remind me that hill start assist had kinda' done that in town a time or two - not nearly as hard as this time, tho'.

Any ideas? Definitely wanna' make the dealer know soon as possible, but wondered if any of you had any insight.

Thanks very much!

Also, I might not have posted this in the correct forum - my apologies if so. Thought maybe this feature was tranny related, but maybe it's actually brake related and my issue doesn't even have anything to do with hill start assist. Could just be the tranny....?

If your in a situation where one or both tires are on a low traction surface, and one wheel spins then it will lock.

And that's the nature if this locker. It's just how it works. And one of it's down falls. It shock loads itself every time it locks.

I take it the truck is a 2018? If so you likely dont have the rpo code sticker in the glove box like all the previous trucks. So you could look on your window sticker if you still have it, or have the dealer print you a build sheet.

That way you can know all the options your truck has.

Yeah, it's a 2018......& I do have the sticker still. I bet you're right about the locker........I bet that's what it was. I was surprised at how much of a jolt it gave, like you said.

I'm still learning........haha. [emoji12][emoji1360]

The All Star package has the G80. The LTZ has it standard so OP should have the G80. I have locked my G80 a ton of times in mud and snow and have never heard noise out of it. I have done a few burn outs on smooth pavement and a drift or 2 on wet pavement and it always seems to engage with out any noticeable noise. I use the Hill assist often too at a place I frequent often and it is on a hill with stop and go traffic and I never hear anything when I gas it. It rolls smooth and engages back once I am stopped again for a few minutes. I remember my 2014 had erratic tranny glitches early on. At 3800 miles it was still running like poo. It occasionally would buck and slam a gear during "coast and throttle tip in" when keeping with the flow of traffic. It did a myriad of other things, but overall it ran like poo. Now when the Lew Tune first went on, it was immediately better. It slowly worked it's way back to it's old ways, just not as bad. Adaptive Learning Technology is responsible for that. If I refreshed the tune, it was awesome again for a while. Could try refreshing your tune and if it gets better it could rule out any mechanical involvement or issue. I replaced my Tranny fluid with Amsoil a little while back and I can honestly say that the truck has been rather smooth since.

I appreciate all that info', man! I def' remember coming across tips like that from you and others in other threads about tranny issues with these trucks. And yes, mine is the LT with the All Star package, so more than likely it has the G80.

I had actually been chatting with my sales rep @ the dealer (who's also a close family friend) about getting me a quote to re-gear since I'm wanting to go to a larger tire anyway. Mine has the 3.42's. Wonder if anyone saw any difference in the behavior of these trannies after a gear swap - don't recall coming across that yet. Probably be the same though...

Need to probably go ahead and take her in anyway for an early first service, so I'll be reflagging the stock tune soon anyway. You think the dealership would replace the fluid with that Amsoil for me?

Interested to see how all the symptoms change when going back to stock, then back to Lew's custom tune.

Thanks...

And just so I'm clear - I don't actually mind feeling the gear shifts - I'm not exactly sure where Lew sets the firmness - I just let him work his magic, so the bumps I feel from gear-to-year don't bother me......sometimes they're smoother than other times (adaptive stuff, like you said)........but what does bother me is the thought of slipping, so if what I felt last night was the G80 locking up, that's one thing......not that I love the idea of all that shock down there........but if it was tranny-related, then hopefully doing some of what you recommended will help. Assuming you're still under warranty, I would install the stock tune then mention the problem to the dealer when you take it in. There could be a TSB or software update for your TCM.

By the way, I'm pretty sure Lew leaves the trans shift firmness the same as stock.
