How do I tell if a have a 6L80-E or a 6L90E transmission? I've looked in my build codes and can't see any thing that tells me. Where do I look next?

I'd get in touch with the dealership or if u get in touch with GM Customer Service on this forum. GM Customer Service was able to PM my built list from my vin number. It showed EVERYTHING installed on my truck from the factory. Start with them, they should be able to lead u in the right way.

GM if your monitoring this site

Trying to decide what to buy -- Truck will be optioned for trailer towing, if 1/2 ton it will have the 9 3/4 in ring gear & 7.3 something rear axle ratio -- Not sure about 3/4 ton specifications

What transmission comes in a 2014 1/2 ton gas Silverado with the trailer towing option -- 5.3 & 6.2 Ecotec3 engine

Would the transmission be different if the trailer towing option was not chosen

I am interested in the same information if it were a 2014 3/4 ton gas Silverado 2500HD

Will the transmissions offered in the GMC trucks be the same as the Chevrolet

I guess easier said, what are all the possible transmission available for the 1/2 & 3/4 ton Chevy & GMC trucks.

Thanks in advance

1/2 ton trucks come with a 6L80E transmission. IMHAO, the 1500 with a towing package will tow a decent amount and should be sufficient for most people but, experience with lighter transmissions show they aren't meant to tow heavy loads for long periods. 3/4 & 1 ton trucks come with a 6L90E transmission. Both the 3/4 & 1 ton come with either a 3.73 or a 4.11 gear altho the 1 tons usually have just the 4.11 gears as they are rated to tow more. (10K for 3/4 ton and up to 30K for diesels) The heavier trucks have a 14 bolt floating axle ratcheting type of differential called a "Gov-lock" positraction.

Again, IMHAO, if you are planning on towing a lot, get the heavier trucks. If you tow a boat of small trailers now and then, the 1/2 ton would work as long as you don't try and tow more than you really should. (Be honest here)
