That's the way the transfer case plug looked on my 2013 at only about 3500 miles! I changed it again at 10,000 miles to see if it was as bad. It wasn't. Seems a lot of wear metal shavings early on then it settled down. My 2015 2500 was not near as bad, but it had a fair amount of metals on it early on also.

I was really expecting it to be worst since I didn't know when it was last changed.

Was that a first time change for the truck and how many miles?

I wouldn't. Some use the High Temp Lock Tight but I can really be a pain in a the butt to get off when the time comes again and you could possibly strip the bolt trying.

My truck has about 39000 miles on it and I just got back from 3600 mile round trip from Wisconsin to Corpus Christy Texas hauling my 19' Travel Trailer. The truck goes in to the dealer tomorrow morning for the frame rust fix and then I am going to scrape up supplies for the transfer case, front and rear differentials and probably take it back in for the transmission. But I will do the other three myself. I will have to research the fluids and supplies needed while the frame is being done. I had been planning on doing these services right after the trip. This is a good reminder.

Ok guys... I swapped the fluid in the transfer case on Saturday. Couldn't have been any quicker/easier! Cheap Autozone fluid pump worked like a champ! My truck is a 2011 Silverado Z71 4x4 with roughly 65k miles. I am the second owner so I'm not sure how much it towed or was used beyond normal street use up to 50k. I don't tow a whole hell of alot but i do some light off-roading and use the 4wd a few times every winter. Anyhow.... The fluid was not terrible, still had a nice red tint to it... But like many others have shown, the plug was covered in metal shavings. (Pictured) I used Castrol's Synthetic Dex V1 to refill until weeping out of the fill hole. I was glad to get the T-case all freshened up since i didn't know if or when the ATF in the transfer case had been changed.

Doing tranny and filter is a whole 'nother beast. That's not one I'll tackle myself. Dropping the pan is difficult, as is pumping the fluid through. It takes a helper, and preferably a knowledgeable one. As much as I hate to let others touch my truck...this is one I don't do myself.

Yeah, even I have my limits. Mostly because I just have too many irons in the fire to take the time necessary to do a complete fluid exchange and filter on the trans. I just have a shop in town do it for me. The rest of the drive train is easy and quick. I just don't have the time to play shade tree mechanic as much as I would like to.

Wondering if you need to warm up the fluid in the transfer case before draining....??
If so what the best way... I am in 0 degrees Celsius/32 Fahrenheit temps right now.
