Can you install a used OEM Chevy radio into a 2013 Silverado 1500 (say, one that you get from a junk yard or buy from someone) or does the radio need to be programmed to the vehicle? My radio display has finally died and I'm either going to get a used OEM radio (better, as I can install it myself) or have an aftermarket unit installed.

(I know some older Honda's, the radio also controls the keyless entry and security systems and you have to get a code from the Honda dealer before the radio can work with your car. Not sure if this is the case with Chevy vehicles or not.)

I don't think so. There was nothing special I had to do with my aftermarket stereo to make it work just fine out of the box. It might be worth your while to go aftermarket and gain bluetooth ability if you have music on your phone. But to each their own for personal preference. I like Crutchfield.com for piecing kits together. Generally have the best price, and thier online chat people are great.

If you get a used OEM radio, it will need to be programmed by the dealer or shop with the necessary equipment. Typically, it is best to go aftermarket unless you really want to keep it stock.

There are sites that will sell you used OEM radios and I think they can pre-program them before shipping them out to you.

At this point, I've decided to just get an aftermarket radio. Nothing fancy, just as long as it has a USB port (for plugging in a phone and USB flash drive with MP3s) and Bluetooth streaming, which I think about 90% of aftermarket radios can do. I am going to look for one that does support the basic audio controls at least (volume and audio selection buttons)... don't really care if the Phone or OnStar function works or not (I don't have an OnStar subscription anyway and don't really use the Bluetooth for the phone...)

Screen on mine finally burned out completely, so it's time to "upgrade" I guess.
