Does anyone know the difference between a 2010+ vin 3 and vin 7 (8th digit) LC9 engine? I have looked looked looked and can't find anything. I know the 07-09 have flat top piston 9.9:1 and VVL. The 10-14 have 9.6:1 valve notched pistons. But why am I finding vin 3 and 7 aluminum block engines in 2010+ trucks?

You are right, there is no difference. 2007-2009 LC9 does not have VVT. If you look at the VIN cards for this generation, GM and or the government changed what some of the positions of the VIN described but I do not know why they changed the VIN code for the LC9, just that they did after 2011.

I think I figured it out. The 2007-2009 LC9 engine was a Vin #3. Then the VVT LC9 came out in 2010 (Also 2011) but still held the Vin #3. I think it was confusing having the VVT and standard cam with the same engine code so they changed the LC9 to Vin 7 in 2012+ Sooooooo any LC9 2010+ is the same engine Vin 3 or 7 doesn't matter.

2007-2009 LC9 vin 3
Flat top pistons, 9.9:1, Non VVT

2010-2014 LC9 vin 3 and 7
Valve relief in pistons, 9.6:1, VVT cam

Variable Valve Timing is VVT Nate. Don't forget the single pattern camshaft in the early motors too!

The differences are e definitely in the cam one being vvt oil driven by rpm. So the cam shafts are slightly different non vvt will have a solid faced timing cover besides the crank seal and cam sensor vvt will have a 3 bolt pattern with a 2in whole in the center of where the cam would be [vvt) also look at timing gear will be alot bigger as in thickness and the cam will have oil journals in cylinder 1 an 4s cam lobe section

No, I have since learned that GM changed the VIN for the LC9 because the 3 was going to be reassigned to another engine on another vehicle line.

The updated LC9 and LMG with VVT were introduced in 2010. VVT came with different pistons, slightly less compression, different camshaft grind, slightly larger injectors, etc. VVT delivered a solid 1 mpg increase in fuel range.
