I just recently bought a 2003 Chevy 2500hd Crew Cab 4x4 with the 6.0L and I am looking to get some nerf bars or running boards. First off, which do you guys like more, running boards or nerf bars? I was kind of leaning towards the nerf bars because I think they look better.

I have been doing some shopping online and at local stores. At one of our local stores they want between $250 to $500 for nerf bars depending on what kind you get. Well, I have been looking on ebay and there are all kinds of nerf bars on there for around $150. I realize these may not be name brand but is there any reasons to not buy one from ebay? Besides getting the wrong part, what other risks are there?

I know this question doesn't belong here but I bought some seat covers from Walmart and they do not fit real tight at all. Is that going to be a problem no matter what kind of covers I buy unless I get custom ones?

I went with Raptor 5" oval nerf bars. Running boards, to me, are just to gawky looking. Keep in mind if you try to be a cheap a$$ then you are gonna get cheap a$$ products. A $50 set of eBay bars will more than likely rust and require jerry-rigged parts.

Let's see your step bars or running boards

The seat cover issue has been addressed before. Search, top right corner. You'll find it. One-size-fits-all covers are a joke. Remember, you pay for what you get.

CoverKing and Headwaters and Clazzio are going to run you atleast $250

Often, you do not get what you expect. That's just the nature of this world we've let it become.
You can pay a little and get crap; you can pay a lot and get crap. There's no guarantee. Bet bet is to physically look at some bars and see what the owners really think of them.
What ever you do, get rocker mounts and do not touch those body bolts.

The ones I am looking at on ebay are stainless steel. I do realize there are different grades of stainless and the ebay ones might be the cheaper grade. I will probably end up getting them at a local store. It is just so tempting to buy on ebay because of the price.

And are you saying I need to get custom made seat covers? Are there online stores that sell good seat covers? I really did not want to spend that much just on seat covers.

BigBlue, why do I need rocker mounts? What is wrong with using the body bolts? And how do I know which way they will mount?

I will be purchasing 4" oval ones from raptor within the next month. Found them online for $300 shipped.

If your not in any rush to make this purchase I can send you some pics right away when they come since I have the exact same truck as you and there aren't a lot of us here to use as a reference.

As for the custom seat covers I feel they are worth it. I ave never had cheap universal fit ones and never want to try them.

"BigBlue, why do I need rocker mounts? What is wrong with using the body bolts? And how do I know which way they will mount?" asked by memory1

Rocker mounts are preferred for two main reasons:

1. Often, the bar mount touches the body mount bolt pocket, resulting in an annoying "squeak" everytime the vehicle flexes.

2. The spot welds holding the nuts up inside the body have been known to break loose, leaving you no way to re-tighten the body mount bolts to the proper torque specs.

The product description of the bars/boards you choose will tell if they are body mount or rocker panel mount. Get rocker; you'll be more satisfied.

GO WITH ROCKER PANEL MOUNTS! I can't stress that enough. The FRAME MOUNTED nerf bars have a lip hinge bracket that make the bars stick way out, have a gap and look horrible. I went with Raptor 5" oval rocket panel mounted bars. High quality, not a bad review out there. Ordered them for $320, shipped. Extended cab bars.

You keep bringing up the eBay bars. Go ahead and order your eBay bars, if you want to. I'd rather pay 300 with peace of mind than have to pay 100 twice with a ton of headache.

Same thing with seat covers. search the forum and you'll see a thread full of custom made seat covers. They look awesome and fit awesome. Your one-size-fits-all covers will be baggy and in your way. I have a pair on a 3/4 ton and they are horrible. $20 autozone deals. They are crap.

Josh, where did you find the rocker mount ones?
4wheelonline.com

Bars were $399. I was eligible for $50 of by applying for a card online. That's $350, then a friend of mine had a discount code for $10 off for every $100, so that dropped it to $320! It was a good deal for me. Worked out awesome.

One thing I didn't see addressed here is whether you're looking for wheel-to-wheel or just under-cab?

I recently purchased some Iron Cross Automotive 4" nerf bars that are wheel-to-wheel. With my lift I can't reach into the bed of the truck very far so I needed the wheel-to-wheel. I'm tall enough I never use them getting in and out of the truck, but man I bet I step up on it to reach into the bed once or twice a day.

One thing I don't like is that there is already some rust spots starting to show on my bar. I've been able to keep up with them, but the bars have only been on 4ish months, so that's kind of a bummer. I also had trouble with the mounting brackets that came with the kit. So I guess I wouldn't recommend getting Iron Cross Automotive bars.

I am in no big rush. Although I am anxious to get some, it can wait. I would love to see some pics. Where are you buying from?

I will probably end up buying a name brand because I want them to last. Are there certain brands to stay away from? If I get wheel to wheel, will they interfere with mud flaps? I have mud flaps installed right now. It would be nice to have wheel to wheel since it is kind of a big reach inside of the bed for me.

I think I am going to make due with the seat covers I have now. Maybe sometime down the road, I will look into some good seat covers. I just can't believe they cost that much.

I'm going to get mine from Realtruck.com

Although your looking for Chrome ab length ones and I'm getting black wheel to wheels it will still give you a decent idea compared to seeing them on the newer body style.

I have a side-shot of my install in my blog blog.php?u=24689&b=1569 and they don't rub. There is only about an 1" of clearance between them. Are yours factory or after-market?

Well you may want to take some measurements, but you would run into this issue with under-cab and wheel-to-wheel wouldn't you? Or do your rear mud flaps go on front and back of the fender-well?

I will get some pics up sometime later. I have been talking to someone from Realtruck through live chat and it looks like I can not get rocker mounted bars for my truck. She said it was not strong enough for the weight of the bars. She has told me Westin and Raptor are now frame mounted and she says if one company switches, the rest will follow.

Here are a couple of pics of truck. It only has about 73000 miles and is a pretty clean truck, inside and out. It came with a topper but I took that off right away. There are a few issues, there is a problem with the fuel pump, has a hole in the line so it takes longer to build up pressure, it needs new tires, ball joints will need to be replaced soon, mostly typical truck stuff.

Yeah, I'd say you wouldn't have any problems with it rubbing in the front. Those don't look to curve backwards any from that angle.

So have you decided on going with wheel-to-wheel or not memory1?

Great looking truck!!! :D :D
