Overhead Console Issues

Hey, Newbie here needing some expert advice. I went to the salvage yard today and got 2 OHC's with the Homelink Option out of a Yukon and a Tahoe for my 2004 Silverado, my current console just had the map lights.

The console(s) I got both had the climate control switches in it but I popped the control module panel out so I could put my current cubby hole storage area in place of it. It's a perfect fit. The climate control has a separate plug and wire independent of the rest so I just left them at the salvage yard.

The pigtail plugs match the wires match, same plug and fits perfectly on my roof mount. I got the Homelink programmed and working for my garage door and gate opener for both of the consoles but the maplights only come on when I push the buttons for each of them. They will not come on when the doors open or when I turn on the interior light switch.

When I open the doors the Homelink button lights come on and then dim out with the dimming of the interior lights. The Homelink buttons will not stay lit when driving but will stay lit when the interior switch is on but most importantly as mentioned above the lights will not come on when the doors are opened or the remote is unlocked etc.

I cannot figure it out? Same plug (2) separate consoles with the same issues. Has anyone experienced this or tried the same thing? I know GM had two separate pigtail plugs one larger and one smaller. Mine is the smaller plug but it fits the console plug perfectly. Was this even an option for a 04 2500 HD Silverado? I see them on Ebay saying they fit my year and make. The map light wiring matches up the same as my factory console.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks so much!

Not familiar with your model year, but how is the interior lighting switched so that they can be permanently off? Most of my vehicles, including my 2017 WT, have 3 positions: always on, on with open door, and always off.

I have the interior override button on my light control panel if that is what you are referring to where I can turn off the interior lights. Is that what you mean GR2017? When I open the doors the door lights (puddle lights) come on and the dome light comes on just not the map lights unless I press the button for each map light. I can pull the console down and plug in my original factory console and it will light right up. Its the strangest thing, not sure what I am missing. When I check fitment on the one's for sale on ebay when I put in 2004 2500HD it will say it's not compatible with my vehicle. When I put 1500 it says it is compatible. Does not make sense because I've converted my current factory console over to LED's and also did my friends 1500 regular cab and we both have the same wiring and the same consoles. Thanks

This is exactly like the one I got at the salvage yard only in the same color as the previously posted Pictures of my current one. I got 2 of these and removed the AC/Heat Control panel and switches like they did in this one and am planning on removing the black plastic storage from my current one and mounting it on the new one. The plug pigtails pictured are my exact same one's that I have. The Homelink buttons work but no lights when opening doors like explained before. I would think it would be just plug and play?

Well I got it figured out. Had to run some jumper wires in the console itself. From what I have discovered it appears GM had two different pigtail plug types for the same years 99-06 and also some of the console map light switches have 2 different switch types. Some have 3 wires running through the map light switch buttons and some have only 2 wires. But it's nice to be able to control my gate and garage doors with the console. Get to get rid of a couple remotes and I picked up the console with Homelink for only $12.00 at the salvage yard. Can't beat that! Thanks

I have console p/n 15056828 out of 01-02 Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe, and Yukon.
I own a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500HD that I am installing it in.
My truck has the same 3 wire connector.
When I plug it in, it appears that everything works - EXCEPT the map lights do not turn on with the door is opened, or when the interior lights are turned on.
However, the map lights work when I push the button to make them work.
What do I need to jump in order for the map lights to come on when the dome lights should be on?

Adding a homelink console to my 2005 Sierra crew cab (without the sunroof), there's another lesson I learned. The lighting functions work differently depending on whether the console is map-lights-only or homelight console with map lights. With the map-lights-only console that was originally on my Sierra, the map lights come on when the door is opened. But with the homelink console, the map lights do not go on/off in response to door open & close. This seems by design. Looking at the two consoles you can see why this is the case. The map light buttons on the two are different. On the map-lights-only console, the light button switches have 3 wire connections whereas the homelink console light buttons have only 2 wires. For the lights-only console switches, the black wire is ground, orange is permanent 12v, and the cream colored wire must be power driven by the door switch, and switching only connects/disconnets the orange & black wires. The cream-to-black connection is unswitched and must be driven by the BCM sensing door open & close. For the homelink console, the 2 wires going to each switch button are permanent 12v power & ground. It lacks the third wire for door-activated lighting.

I verified this by examining my 2001 Suburban LT which has a stock homelink console. It's map lights don't come on upon door open...only by console switch activation. Also, it's map light button switches are the 2 wire type.

As has been mentioned, I suppose a person could make the homelink console lighting work like the lights-only console by moving the map light switches, wire harness w/ connector, & light eyes from the lights-only console over to the homelink console, and then splice into the lights-only harness to supply power/ground to the homelink controller.
