Did the instrument cluster gauge also indicate a low oil pressure reading in conjunction with the code? or is it reading an unusually high pressure?

No the gauges haven't changed. Just the error code popping up.

 

What oil filter did you use. Seen this 1-2 times at work? Can't remember the exact code but it was oil pressure related. Also have seen the oil pump shatter internally on 1 truck.

Just for grins I would try an acdelco. It probably is not your problem but I have seen one confirmed case of oil filters killing oil pressure. Can't remember what brand it was but it happened in the last month or so and was a proof positive failure.

 

I'm thinking of replacing the oil control valve and seeing it that is my issue. I guess they can get stuck.

 

So....having a hard time finding replacement parts. Figure I'll start easy with the adjustible oil control valve. Then the oil pump. And then the sending unit.

Tried replacing the oil filter with a K&N. Didn't help

 

Resurrecting this thread because my truck has thrown this code twice and after two restarts of the truck it just goes away. Anybody figure out why this comes and goes?

 

Bumping this thread looking for any updates. Truck is intermittent with throwing this code. Anyone figure this out? Oil pressure is showing normal

 

My 2015 Silverado 5.3 just threw this code the other day. I had already scheduled an appointment with the dealer because I heard a whining noise when I started my truck up. My truck only has 32000 miles. The noise was similar to power steering pump with a bad bearing. Well turns out, the noise I heard and the code are related. The dealer said there is a solenoid on the oil pump which controls the oil pressure. The solenoid on my oil pump was stuck on high, so the noise I heard was the oil pump. I know they needed to replace the solenoid, not sure what else because its still at the dealer.

Oh man, that concerns me now too. My truck started making a similar whining noise this week when starting but I thought it was just related to the cold....

 

That's what I thought as well. The noise started when it was -8 outside and I just thought everything was cold. Once it warmed up to the 20s the noise was still there. A couple days later, the check engine light appeared and I checked the code. I would keep an eye on your oil pressure gauge.

 

I wanted to drop back by and update this thread with my findings. It seems that my truck will throw this code when it's low on oil. Every time it's thrown it in the last year, I've checked the oil and needed to add at least half a quart of oil or up to a quart. Every time I add oil and clear the code, it doesn't come back again for a long time.

 

I'm going to jump in here. I have a '14 Sierra and it threw the P06DD about 10 days ago. The Dealer said the oil solenoid is stuck in the off position. Electronically, they can get it to switch on and off...which supposedly means the solenoid is ok, but that the oil pump is working improperly causing the switch to malfunction. Either way, the solenoid is inside the oil pump and can't be replace separately so the oil pump has to be replaced. About a $2,100 fix.

 

Yea, I'm going to wait for my oil pump to fail if that's the case. I just keep an eye on my oil pressure and make sure the pressure is changing properly based on RPM's.

 

Check your powertrain warranty. This might be covered under that. If you wait to long, it might expire and you'll have to pay the whole thing.

 

My power train expired in August of this year. That's 5 years after I bought it anyway.

 

Keeping this thread updated with my findings. Good news, it's not the oil pump in my case, it's the oil pressure sensor getting gunked up and not being able to properly read oil pressure. My mechanic said it's a $140 job to drop the oil pan and clean up the lower part of the engine and the sensor. Worst case, he said I'd have to replace the sensor and it's only a $60 part with no additional labor since the pan would already be off.

 

Replace the oil sending unit. But when you take the old one out, get a pick and take out the screen in the hole and throw it away. Install the new one and your good to go.

 

Have you dealt with this before Cribb86? Turns out the dealership and my mechanic both are saying I do in fact need to replace the oil pump. My mechanic quoted me $1,800 to do the work, dealership was $3,200.

 

I changed oil and filter and used the acdelco filter instead of the cheap one Wal-Mart put in. I didn't have any oil pressure issues, just the engine light with a P06DD code. After I changed the filter and oil I cleared the code and its been a week now and code hasn't came back on. SO try that first, easier than changing that sending unit for sure.

 

Interesting, I have been using Purolator Boss filters for awhile now, specifically ever since I started changing it myself after my free changes were up. I just changed my oil again a couple weeks ago, next time I'll try an ACDelco filter and clear the code to see if that helps.

Looking back, the noise started soon after I got an oil change, but I didn't think much of it. If I had seen this thread I would have taken the truck to the mechanic earlier

This weekend I lost all oil pressure (at least the gauge said I did) at 60mph. I immediately turned the motor off and pulled over. Had the truck towed to a mechanic, unfortunately not my regular mechanic because I was too far away from home. Waiting to hear what the diagnosis is. There was never a CEL so I am assuming it didn't throw P06DD, but it sounds like the same problem. 131,000 miles so I am well outside of the warranty. I'm just hoping the engine isn't junk

 

You may be lucky but I've heard of 2014/2015's having catastrophic oil pump failure that basically grenades the engine. I've been running with a P06DD now for 8 months. Waiting on my bonus from work next month so I can finally get the oil pump replaced with the improved version they put in the 2016+.
