Painting hood protector/bug shield

I just purchased the AVS Aeroskin hood protector for my 2008 Silverado. The front is pretty beat up with chips, etc so I thought I'd give this a try before possibly having the hood repainted (and then clear film applied to protect).

So, before I possibly paint the hood I'm giving this a try. Since it's a matte black and smooth I thought it might be able to be painted and have some automotivetouch.com paint left from my headlight colormatch. I saw that somebody on the F150 forums painted theirs white to match and it looks really good.

Has anybody painted one of these hood protectors? I might paint it, then have the clear film applied to protect it a little better. I'm not sure what type of plastic it is but I figured it might need a primer to help bond to the paint after the adhesion promoter.

I have one on mine which is directly on top of 3M clear bra. It's a softer, flexible composite plastic...not sure exactly what it's made of. I cant really see being able to sand it down and getting paint to stick to it, especially knowing the elements it has to stand up to. UV light would kill it.

You might have better luck wrapping it in vinyl. Vvivid probably has a white that gets you close enough.

You'll be disappointed in the result if prep is not done properly. In the old days there was adhesion promoter and flex additives. Not sure what's out there now. No matter what you use, you need to sand with no coarser that 500 grit. Degrease it thoroughly. It must be primed and then top coated. Even then there's no guarantee it will stick once it gets hit with stones.

Of course they don't make the colormatched ones for the GMT-900s. I'm betting that they are molded in the color and probably not actually painted.

I guess I can check with a local paint shop and see if they can paint it. They would probably be better equipped to paint something as flimsy as the hood shield.
Sounds like going to a good local paint shop is the best route. My uncle got this Sierra project that we'll work on after we finished installing the suspension from 4Wheelonline onto the Wrangler and clear the garage. The truck got real bad chips as well so we might need a good prep before painting.

I found a 3M vinyl that matches pretty close. It's not perfect but it's close enough.

3M actually sent me a colorwheel of every vinyl they make that's pretty cool. It's like a paint wheel but all of the actual vinyl swatches.

My brother in law just got a 2020 Silverado and had the dealer fix a scratch that must have happened during transport and you can't tell it was even there. They use an outside guy to do that work so I'm going to see what he can possibly do to fix some of them. I got an estimate of $500-$600 to completely repaint the hood which would be my last route.
