Power outlets - high pitch squeal - help

SO just bought a 2015 Silverado 5.3. After the first day I had to take it back because the radio didn't work (no antenna) and the Bluetooth speaker and onstar didn't t work. It ended being some communication module that fixed the onstar and Bluetooth microphone.
My truck has the full center counsel so it has the 3 USB ports 2 cig lighter style ports and an outlet like you would see in a house. I plugged my usb phone charger in the USB ports today and when u plug it in at first it is fine. As soon as I plugged my phone in on the other end of the cable I get a high pitch constant squeal. So I then tried the cig lighter style port and the wire plugged in alone is fine as soon as I plug the phone in I get a low pitch buzz for about 10 sec then it sort of goes away. So I decided to try the house outlet style one. No noise really but as soon as you plug something into it I hear a single click from the dash area but it seems to work fine. I'm really hoping this truck doesn't have some kind of electrical problem. Anybody had any of these issues?
I do also have 2 USB ports under the arm rest and those work fine without issue when I plug in my phone. Just FYI

Most likely, the high pitched squeal you are hearing is "noise" on the electrical system from the charging phone. If you unplug the phone, it should stop. Also, most likely, the noise is coming over the radio. If you turn that off, most likely the squeal will stop. The noise is actually interfearence in the electrical system that is bleeding through to the stereo.

How do you get rid of it? Aside from unplugging the cell phone or other device from the USB or turning off the stereo, I don't know how to stop it.

I will check in the morning but I think I had the radio off. It seemed like the noise was coming from around where the usb plug was (under the radio area). What you said does make sense but it doesn't at the same time. What are those USB ports intended for, if not to charge or hookup your phone? Especially since right in the manual they talk about how the features in the truck were designed to work with Apple products (iPhone iPod etc.). My dad said he had a similar issue in his Honda CR-V but his was deff making the noise thru the radio. I will check again in the morning and post what I find.

Does it squeal with say a battery pack installed? If so you have an issue maybe bad cap but shouldn't be already really. If its interference from the phone... Get a USB cable with a Choke on in. Looks like a big knot clamped on or molded on. Really the truck should have there own installed and the radio should as well. High quality!!! For a permanent fix you could always add some chokes to the supply inside.

What do you mean in your first sentence? Battery pack? The squeal happens as soon as I plug the end of the cable into my phone. I'll try it with the truck off tomorrow and see what happens. But I don't think anything will happen cause I don't think the phone charges when the truck is off.
Do you have a pic of what you mean by a charger with a choke? I have an iPhone 6 and I try to use only Apple charge cables cause they say non Apple chords can mess up the battery in the phone after awhile but if it stops the squeal I'd use it. But I've never seen what you are referring to. I am deff not electrical savvy so I wouldn't know where to start to install a choke to the supply like you said. Lol.

A charger with a choke would have a round tube looking object close to one end of the cable. Similar to what u would see on a monitor cable or some electronics power cables.
Also using genuine Apple cable to prevent damage is just their way of getting u to buy their overpriced cable... any good cable and u will be fine

I get that noise from just about all of the cigarette lighter usb chargers I use. I don't know enough about the electronics in them, but I don't think they have capacitors, since they're stepping down 12v to 5v. I unplug mine when I'm not using it, doesn't help with your built in ones though. Either way, it's not a major issue, just an annoyance.

It could be coil whine but I have never heard it from anything inside a car. Is it high piched?
I hear it a lot from computer equipment like video cards or power supplies, but they are pulling a ton of power at full utilization.
If its under warranty id take it to the dealer and complain to them.

If you take it to the dealer, guaranteed they will blame it on the USB cord or device

It does happen when the truck is off. So those ports are on when the key is off. And it is not coming from the radio it is coming from the USB port. I am going to try getting a new cable today with one of those chokes. Hopefully they have them for the iPhone at Walmart of rite aid. Also the connection to those front ports is loose compared to the ones in my glove box. But I have tried another cable I had but it is the same as my other one. I don't know.
I also read that those front ports are reduced voltage or amps or something and are really meant for thumb drives or iPod to load music. Not sure if that's true or not.

They'll be lowering voltage. Generally the car's electrical will run off of 12v. USB devices run at 5v, so those ports have to step the 12v down. Dunno what the amps will be. An iPhone charger (official one) will put out 1A. An iPad charger, again official one, puts out a little over 2A. A flash drive, if it's USB 3.0, should consume about less than 1A.

As to the noise though, I'm still going with electrical components related to the USB ports. I don't know if there's a solution though. If it was coming through the speakers while your phone was plugged in, that's an easier fix. The choke generally cleans up noise between the source and the device, I don't think it'll affect the noise if it's coming from the USB ports themselves.

EDIT: Re-read your initial post. I think the noise will be coming from a small transformer inside that electrical component, where your usb/lighter/plug is. Same as when you hear noise coming from those high voltage transformers, except that this is much smaller. There's some AC/DC conversion going on in there, and those transformers tend to have that noise when they're working, as in under load. It may vary depending on what's plugged in and how much power it's pulling. You may be able to get that that unit replaced under warranty if it bugs you enough though, maybe?

Just made an appt at local dealer for Monday. Hopefully they just replace it. Just asked them to check all plugs including the cig lighter ones cause I'm still getting a slightly static type noise from those ones.
As far as the 110 house type outlet tho, it doesn't make a constant noise when in use but when I plug something into it there is a single click noise from the dash on the right side of the steering wheel. Is that normal? I figured that is a different type outlet so thought maybe there is some kind of converter or something clicking on?

Its unlikely they have a transformer (dc/a.c./dc) on the dc plugs. But they will in the inverter for the 110AC. You shouldn't hear it either. If any of the components are making noise that you hear it will likely need to be replaced. Prob just a cheap quality cap. I'm curious as to what the put in it lol.Maybe they will swap out the entire dc system.

Might be a relay kicking in.

Maybe someone on here with a similar truck and options can attest to whether theirs makes the same clicking sound from within the dash when a USB device is plugged in, although doesn't seem likely to be the source of your problem.

Let us know what the dealer says, I'm intrigued.

I wouldn't worry about the click. Probably is a relay as said. Probably a safety feature for the 110 and similar to the safety outlets in you home.

So what did the dealer say?
Jack shit. They didn't know what it was making the squeal from the usb. Then they said they wanted to look up and see if other ppl had that issue but their computers were down. So I took the truck back and hey were supposed to call me and haven't heard back from them so I have to call them back.

Just bought a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and it does it too. Couldn't figure out what it was but it sounds normal because lots of peoples do it.
