I have had a parasitic drain for 6 years and can’t find it. Eventually killed the battery so I replaced it today. Connecting the leads and smoke starts pouring out of defrost vent on drivers side of dash. Any ideas? My thought is that might be where the power drain has been. No I didn’t hook the battery leads backwards
Thanks

Hopefully you disconnected the battery right away.

Whatever failed may or may not have been related to the parasitic draw, as when you connect the battery, a bunch of computers get powered up and they go through a variety of checks, and apparently around that time, something decided to let the magic smoke out.

Yes I disconnected quickly but it was probably 20-30 seconds. I actually smelled

Probably 20-30 seconds and could smell the burning before I saw smoke.

Problem solved. What Chevy calls the center console fuse box, under steering column to left, is a connector for trailer brakes. That 5 wire harness is what was smoking and melting. Must be an issue in brake controller. Replaced both and haven’t had a problem.
