Speedometer Re-calibration for Larger Wheels/Tires

Hey everyone,

First time poster, long time reader here. I have a 2016 1500 Z71 and I'm upgrading my wheels and tires. My stock wheels are the 18x8.5 and the tires are P265/65R/18. I'm upgrading to a 20x9 wheel and a 33" tire. I've seen a lot of different information on whether or not I need to re-calibrate my speedometer for this change. I've also seen speed differences of 4% being mentioned. So, if someone could help tell me if I actually need to re-calibrate or not, that would be great.

Depends if it'll bug you or not that it's off. I would though if I were you.

I've never used the RC one, I have a Diablosport I2 Tuner that I use, but if you go that route you risk voiding your warranty (not trying to start that debate), plus if you get the tuner you can do a ton more to the truck than just recalibration. I think the dealer can do it as well.

Dealer here at least can/will not. Not sure what it really is. I asked the one I bought my truck from after I lifted it and was told that they can only recalibrate them to a size that is a factory option. Tried a few other GM dealers in my area and near work. All told me the same thing. I had it done in January by a local shop that does a lot of lifts. They charged me $45.

Gotchya, yea I've heard some do, some don't, but that's probably the general consensus. There is a 4wheelparts near me that does it too. I would call some area offroad shops and see what they say if you don't want to buy the tool yourself. Like Fisger8new said, it'll be a lot cheaper to take it somewhere and have them do it versus buying a tool. I'd buy the Diablosport though if I were you! I love mine

Perfect, I'll check some shops in my area and see if they'll do it. My only concern then is if I need a power train warranty issue. But I'm sure they can reset it if needed.

If you were to have a power train issue. I'd imagine that the 33" tires would be what a dealer would point to before having the speedo calibrated for it. After all, it's not the reading of how fast they are spinning that puts more stress on the driveline. Not to say it would be denied for lift/tires. But for sure that is a bigger warning flag and easier to spot.

Yeah I'm sure they would use the bigger ties and excuse as well. Fingers crossed no issues occur prior to the warranty expiring. My family has had GM trucks their whole lives with very few issues.

I did pick up the Diablosport turner though, I figured along with the speedo calibration, I can also use it to get my KN cold air intake and CAT back exhaust working well together. I appreciate all the advise guys, it's been a big help.

Sounds like you got is all set up. 33's with the newer trucks should not really be an issue. Depending on rear gears it might feel slightly sluggish. But really not bad. They are still not into that crazy weight that you start to see when hitting 35+ MT tires where it really drags some down.

What do you call and ask the shop… Do y’all do recalibration? I have two buddies that own shops for well over 30 years… They were telling me the dealer… They would’ve told me John go here if they knew somebody that did it. One of them does mainly transmissions rear in front and stuff, but he also got a bunch of machines from Hoss automation, and they now build a lot of their own stuff… He was a go, kart guy, makes his own carburetors, he’s rebuilt a couple of the new motors that screw up with this valve and cam issue
