Steering Wheel Position Sensor

Hey guys,

My truck is acting up a bit. When I start it up there is no lights on the dash, but once I drive roughly 10 minutes or so at highway speeds I get the service stabilitrac, stabilitrac off, service traction control, traction control off warnings. When I turn it off and back on, the warnings are gone again for another 10 minutes or so. And it is throwing code C0710, steering wheel position sensor. I took a look at the one under my dash that is failing and it has a 6 pin electrical connector. I went to my local dealership and it turns out GM has discontinued this part and instead makes the same one, but with an 8 pin connector.

The wiring harness on my truck has room for the 8 pin sensor but only has the 6 wires coming out. Would I be able to use this new sensor with 8 pins or would it still throw a code since 2 of the pins wouldn't be connected to any wire. If not, any idea where I would be able to find the correct sensor with 6 pins? I've tried every parts store in town and looked online with no luck.

Thanks for any feedback.

I just did this on my 2011. Picked up the part from the Chevy Dealer. The part number I gave him was the old number and he told me there's a new number that supersedes it. But there the same part. Took me about an hour to do..Real easy..just watch some YouTube videos and you will have no problem...I was getting the same warnings as you are as soon as I moved the wheel..

Do you have that part number handy? I know someone looking and could use the help tracking this down. Was the new part number a 6 pin to fit?

Really, Neal? I also know somebody looking for one...

The problem for us with six pin connector (2007-2010) using the eight pin is that the physical connector is slightly different. Regardless of the number of wires there are.

2007-10 part # is 15886733 and 2011+ # is 19418403. Well... One of them.

It was this one part number 20910871 that I got from the Chevy dealer. But when I called him I gave him part number 19418403 and he told me that the 20910871 was the new number.

If it is an 8 pin part....cant see that one due to plastic over them....does it still work with a 6 pin harness? The plugs looked to be the same size....just has more or less pins in there.

07-10 vs. 11+

Yup, that's the one I need. Let me know if you happen to find one anywhere! This is driving me nuts that GM has already stopped making this part when the trucks that use them are only 10-13 years old.
Haven't found one. However, it appears that I got my issue resolved by getting my truck aligned. It was only done yesterday, but the light did not come on during either of the two rides I took afterwards.

My steering wheel was ever so slightly crooked to the right and I guess that was enough to trick the sensor to believe something was fishy going on with the steering.

Hmmm interesting! My steering wheel is also crooked to the right and it is driving me nuts not being straight how it is supposed to. I'll be getting my truck into the shop for an alignment asap now. Hopefully I have the same outcome as you. Thanks!

Hey everyone. I just went through the Stabilitrac Service error (which chimed in as soon as I put the vehicle in gear and started moving) and was able to resolve it by replacing the steering wheel position sensor. There's a couple of great YouTube's I watched to prep for the job (I strongly recommend anyone trying this study those closely) and I did actually try cleaning the switch's electrical connectors and the connector to the Body Control Module prior to replacing - it actually seemed to help but the error kept showing after the truck moved 10ft instead of 2ft. The total switch replacement did resolve the problem. One tip: the four 15mm nuts that hold the steering column to the internal dash supports have enough threaded stud length sticking out of them to interfere with using a normal 3/8" 15mm socket so I used a 5/8" spark plug socket instead and it worked great. I also used a long extension and for the two lower nuts I added a swivel because the angles were a bit harder to deal with. Oh, one more thing - there's a wire cage on the bottom of the metal retainer that holds the sensor in place on the column. That cage is a guide for the shift cable so when the column goes back over the swivel make sure that the cable is put in that cage at the same time. Finally - I can't stress this enough - tape the steering wheel to the column as good as you can. You do not want it to move. I used painters tape, duct tape and hockey tape. The extra effort up front is worth the feeling of satisfaction when it all comes together and the error disappears (hopefully for many km's and months).
