Looking at getting my dad a new SxS for Christmas.

The two I am looking at are a Honda Pioneer 700 deluxe or a Canam Defender DPS HD8

This will be replacing his 04' polaris ranger 500, which has done anything he has needed it too so not looking at getting anything that has 50+hp and goes 80mph

Does anyone have any experience with one or both of them?

seems everyone I know gets a canam but I know ATV wise I would only own honda so that's why I cant make up my mind.

The other Caveat is can am is offering an incentive for agriculture/farm use that you can get a 3 year warranty with no extra charge if you use your farm account.

Also he does not know he is getting one.. cant wait for the surprise.

If he's not after performance and just wants a good, reliable machine, I'd get the Honda.

The Honda is also a little smaller than the Can am which can help or hurt depending on the situation.

The Polaris stuff is sort of hit or miss. The more utility oriented models seem to be more consistent in the reliability department. The higher performance models are where we saw the majority of issues at the dealer I worked at.

But you can't really go wrong with the Honda for a reliable rig. May not be the fastest or the most powerful, but they seem to outlast most others from the experience I've had.

Awesome thanks for the response! I just dont know anyone with a pioneer and I wish I did.

He mainly uses it to ride through and check on the cows and hunts/fishes.

Definitely would like to stick with the utility models, he would likely tell me to take the sporty models back because he cant work out of it.

I had a family member get a newer utility polaris and it seems to be having issues lately and its not very old at all.

Curious why not replace it with a new Ranger, since the old one has been so good?

They all have their issues, but I've had 4 trouble free years out of my Polaris General, and it hasn't been babied. I've done some trail rides with a few Honda Pioneer 1000s, and they've done well, it's a big, heavy machine though. Just from what I've heard, the transmission is their weak point. The engine would probably run forever.

My buddy has a Can Am, and it's been fine, but it's insanely hot in the summer, since the engine is essentially in between the seats. There's fixes for that though.

Reason being is another family members grand dad has a newer ranger 18+ and is constantly having issues with it. He doesn't work it hard like my dad might from time to time either.

The current ranger he has the engine is right under the middle seat in the front so you are basically sitting on it too.

The pioneer 1000s are bigger and faster for sure, the 700 deluxe I have been looking at is about the same power and speed as the current one so I feel like it will fit the bill in that department. But I am reading reviews of how its trans and drive train is not smooth like the canam. Several reviews on forums saying 6000 trouble free miles out of there 700 as well.

yeah and they are doing a 3000 rebate this month on that model as well.. but its more expensive by several grand.

I do keep thinking about it though.. might be hard to maneuver in the woods when hunting and through some of the creeks

Thanks for the input kevin, this is turning out to be harder than I thought it would be.

I think he would get the honda whereas I would get the canam.

We are taking a trip to go pick up a front loader for the tractor this weekend.. 6 hours one way. I am sure I can sneak in a conversation without him getting suspicious since we will have plenty of time to talk ha

If anyone was wondering.. this is definitely not a good time to buy one. I have checked multiple dealers and nobody wants to budge off of MSRP.. and the APR is 5-7%

I figured it would not be that hard to get 500-1000 knocked off. Although if I buy out of state I can get sales tax excluded $1000-1500 or so.

That's exactly the case. Most places don't have the models I need and will not until January. The places that do have them people pay the MSRP no issues.. I am a tight wad though.

Once place I called today said they have 2 coming in but have a wait list for that exact model and both of those are presold.

Wound up changing from looking at a honda pioneer 700 to the pioneer 1000.

Went and drove both the pioneer 1000 and the canam defender.

Canam wins hands down, the pioneer was so jerky at slower speeds that I don't think I would buy it.

My dad does a lot of "creeping" around looking at the cows and fences and wooded trails so he doesn't go fast a lot.

When uploading from the phone it seems to only supply links, Here are the pictures. If a mod wanted to replace the previous links with these by all means go for it.
