The Drive Shaft literally snapped in half!

Hey everyone!

So I drive a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 4x4 5.3 L v8 and my driveshaft has literally snapped in half ! I was not experiencing any vibration unless it gradually did over time and I never noticed... but definitely nothing noticeable or any noise coming from it even on the highway. I was not hauling any weight when it happened, and I was not going at a high speed (thankfully) It was off a red light I went to accelerate and it just snapped and I heard the drive shaft flinging around hitting stuff. Ive attached some pictures so you guys can see what happened its honestly hard for me to wrap my head around it haha.
Im happy it did not happen in the middle of no where because I have not had any issues in the past and take good care of my truck.

When I did take the back piece of the drive shaft off I noticed the rear U bolt was quite stiff one of the ways when I would try and move it. But I wouldn't think that would be enough to literally snap it in half.... my only thought is that it was damaged perviously because I did buy it used at just over 100,000 KM but everything was redone before I bought it from the dealership. I am now at 150,000km I have taken the plate off the differential with my neighbour who is a mechanic and we spun the back wheels checking all the gears inside making sure nothing would catch and everything looked fine. The diff fluid was also very clean. My only thought was somehow that U-bolt caused this or the aluminum was deficient.

Anyone have any other thoughts ?

Wow! I have not see that. If everything spins freely then there must have been some damage on the shaft that failed spontaneously.

I know right! I cannot think of anything else because everything seems to be working fine. I'm just thankful it didn't happen when I was on the highway, was planning on going camping this coming weekend Haha.

His is a rather odd occurrence, the drive shaft twisted and just sheeted itself right in the middle... rather odd I'd say, any lift on the truck, like blocks or something? I've heard of people doing this on high hp vehicles on prepped surfaces but never on a semi stock truck taking off from a light...

Yeah i know its super odd. Especially just taking off from a red light and it's not like I was doing a burnout lol I just accelerated normally. And nope no lift or anything everything was stuck from the dealership the suspension was re done at 100,000 km but it was was replaced with stock parts.

Is it odd to see the back half of the drive shaft still sitting in the old position though. Wonder if that u joint froze and caused extra resistance along with some other pre existing issue? How is the gas tank from being smacked by sheeted aluminum?

Yeah it should he dangling like the other piece I would think. When I took it off that u joint was really stiff like I could still move it back and forth by hand but it was difficult like definitely not how it should have been. Once I lubed it up to try and take it apart it was moving more freely. It definitely played a factor I think too along with something deficient with the metal. I took the clips out and I cant even get the caps off the u joint though.

The gas take is fine luckily, I was only starting to accelerate from a red light thankfully. The exhaust took most of the hits when the piece was flopping around sounding like a tin can baha.

I guess you'd have to get those wheels up to see if the rear end / gears still turn back there. Truck looks stock, the shaft does not have a bad angle and you can see the axle / wheel.
I actually did do this, according to my build sheet my differential is limited slip and they seem to spin fine. The truck is stock (havn't had the chance to do anything yet haha) I even took the diff plate off and drained the oil and watched the gears as they spun and everything looked fine.

I wonder why the rear 1/4 of that driveshaft is still up and pointing straight forward instead of hanging down at a 7 or 8 ocklock position...... does that look odd to anyone else too?

1 things for sure...I feel like going home and getting under my truck and lubing my u joints now.

canada is hard on them metal parts
Hahaha yeah thats why I wanted to share this with everyone. Never even heard of this happening before usually it would break at the U Joint. But yes we are, the -50 degrees C to +40 degrees C climate puts them to the test haha

I had a u joint fail on me doing 70 mph on the interstate. Wanna talk about a good time to carry extra toilet paper? I was blessed I didn't get pogo'd across the median. But it is not a good feeling!! But your case is definitely odd for sure. I've never seen or heard of that. Glad you're okay!

I have seen them fail at speeds above 100 mph, but not from acceleration from a stop light.

Time to call Driveshaft Specialist and order a 5" .120 wall Aluminum one.

Oh Snap!! Get it. Sorry couldn't help that one. I would say that seized up u- joint had something to do with it. Ever go off road with it? If there was a dent in the shaft (you probably would have felt it) that in combo with that funky u-joint would have be the cause of you catastrophic failure.
