I have seen them fail at speeds above 100 mph, but not from acceleration from a stop light.

Time to call Driveshaft Specialist and order a 5" .120 wall Aluminum one.

Metal fatigue? Fatigue occurs when a metal is subjected to repeated loading and unloading. It may have seen some hard use prior to you acquiring it. Probably pulled or hauled heavy loads routinely.

Oh Snap!! Get it. Sorry couldn't help that one. I would say that seized up u- joint had something to do with it. Ever go off road with it? If there was a dent in the shaft (you probably would have felt it) that in combo with that funky u-joint would have be the cause of you catastrophic failure.

WOW!!!
I see this a few times in army trucks (Unimogs) but never in a street truck
Looks like you have a lot of torque :D
The guys in the army here replace the tube with a stronger one, mig or tig welded

Cheers

Hey everyone!

So I drive a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 4x4 5.3 L v8 and my driveshaft has literally snapped in half ! I was not experiencing any vibration unless it gradually did over time and I never noticed... but definitely nothing noticeable or any noise coming from it even on the highway. I was not hauling any weight when it happened, and I was not going at a high speed (thankfully) It was off a red light I went to accelerate and it just snapped and I heard the drive shaft flinging around hitting stuff. Ive attached some pictures so you guys can see what happened its honestly hard for me to wrap my head around it haha.
Im happy it did not happen in the middle of no where because I have not had any issues in the past and take good care of my truck.

When I did take the back piece of the drive shaft off I noticed the rear U bolt was quite stiff one of the ways when I would try and move it. But I wouldn't think that would be enough to literally snap it in half.... my only thought is that it was damaged perviously because I did buy it used at just over 100,000 KM but everything was redone before I bought it from the dealership. I am now at 150,000km I have taken the plate off the differential with my neighbour who is a mechanic and we spun the back wheels checking all the gears inside making sure nothing would catch and everything looked fine. The diff fluid was also very clean. My only thought was somehow that U-bolt caused this or the aluminum was deficient.

Anyone have any other thoughts ?
Mine jus done the excact same thing turning at a four way no reason at all it should have done that I have no explanation 🙈

this happened to me yesterday, if driving this could be deadly!

it's hard to believe a drive shaft would be made with super thin aluminum, maybe AI was involved?

I have photos on my phone, I'm going to upload tonight hopefully

Are you just responding to a 7 year old thread for the hell of it, or do you have something constructive and valuable to share?

Yes. Its paper thin aluminum.

Driveshafts have been made out of steel or aluminum tubes for a VERY long time, for everything from the smallest cars, to heavy duty trucks.

When used within their design limits, they work fine and last a long time.
